Antichrist #2
Ever since its formal conception in 1966 by Anton LaVey, the Satanic religion has faced a close-minded society. Much of this animosity towards Satanism is due to the general ignorance of the masses. In fact, Satanism is not about devil worship since no single god is ever defined in its tenets. Actually, each follower is encouraged to reach a constantly higher level of evolution. Satanism does not condone any type of illegal action such as murder, kidnapping, animal or human sacrifice. The reason such actions have been connected to Satanism is the media. Events such as sacrifice are often attributed to "satan-worshipers" even though the majority of cases are by people who are not formally, well-practicing members of the religion.
It is hard for me to defend Satanism since I am not a follower. However, during the time I have spent researching its texts, I have undergone a change in my personal view of the religion and its practicers. When LaVey wrote the Satanic Bible, he emphasized what Satanists do not do in the "Nine Satanic Sins"
and the "Nine Satanic Statements." Therefore, a person who sacrifices children is not, by definition, a Satanist. That person, obviously, would not be a strong believer in the religion. Satanists have produced a wealth of literature both defending themselves and attacking society for the currently negative outlook on Satanism. Perhaps, if you too have an open mind, you will further investigate the myths and misconceptions surrounding this religion. You may even be surprised at how you feel about it afterwards.
