| THE WHEEL OF FORTUNE, MAJOR ARCANA # 10 - Principles of Prosperity |
"Reaching down and finding confidence has made all my dreams come true."
-Arsenio Hall
The Wheel of Fortune in the major arcana speaks of the principles of opportunity, breakthrough and prosperity. Oh- the Fickle Finger of Fate- why does it touch some with a golden caress and others with a cold shove? And when is my luck going to turn around, anyway? That's what most people are thinking when they have a Tarot reading. When the Wheel of Fortune pops up in it's upright position it's a sign that opportunity is knocking and they might be in the right place at the right time to open that door.
However, the Wheel of Fortune is not just a game show or a good omen, it is the 10th card of the major arcana. According to the book "Spiritual Tarot" by Signe E Echols MS, Robert Mueller PH.D and Sandra A Thompson- "Major Arcana 1-10 depict our inner potential and establish strengths that we can draw on for our life journey. Major Arcana 11-20 give us a look at the challenges we must face as we "come of age". They are like the Native American concept of the Vision Quest and the Australian aboriginal concept of the walkabout. They are our shamanic trial."
In other words, the Wheel of Fortune is not the "happy ever after" card. Yes, it is a card of breakthrough and abundance but the very nature of the card is cyclical representing the inevitability of what goes up going down again. This suggests that after a breakthrough comes some of the toughest challenges that we will ever have to experience. If we realize that "success" is cyclical and temporary in nature we can avoid the pitfalls of getting our egos puffed up when it comes around and resting on our laurels. Also, knowing that luck is cyclical can be a blessing when we are "down on our luck" knowing that we can plan ahead for our upward journey toward a happier future. It is only when we stop evolving, stop growing that the wheel can get stuck in the mud of our limited perceptions.
Since every major arcana card contains not only a theme such as luck and prosperity but guidance pertaining to that theme, what can we learn about creating abundance and prosperity from this card? First, we must look at the card's placement and numerological value. If you think of the Major Arcana as stepping stones to the evolution of the soul as Carl Jung looked at it, before a person is ready for this period of breakthrough they have gone through the first 9 steps of growth that we have discussed in previous articles, from the Magician, (1) to the Hermit, (9). But the goddess Fortuna from Roman mythology whose symbol is the wheel of time is famous for being far from fair or orderly.
She can reward those who are not ready or especially worthy while neglecting the good hearted and the needy. This temperamental feature of luck and fortune will always be one of the great mysteries of life. One thing is for certain, if we fall subject to envy and bitterness at other people's good fortune, luck will always turn against us. Collectively, we are all subject to the great wheel of hope, glory, regret and despair, (that is if we turn off the television long enough, if not we just watch other's go through it.)
The number 10 of the Wheel of Fortune represents culmination. The 10 is related to the 1 as a new beginning but this time with experiences and higher wisdom to be gained. The 10 represents a temporary "break" that allows us to acknowledge the success of our previous accomplishments and move on to our next cycle of growth.
The Wheel of Fortune is much more than "the good luck card", it is a reminder of the natural cycles of life, to learn to be adaptable, expect the unexpected and to kiss the joy as it flies. The big prize is not the new car or the big house, (though they are nice), but it is the self enlightenment that assures us balance and peace in the midst of major fluctuation-that can never topple down.
Here are some tips from the book "Spiritual Tarot" on how to actualize "The Wheel" in your life:
. Be prepared to roll with the punches of life.
. Determine how past events could be affecting your present attitudes and behaviour.
. Be alert to unexpected opportunities. Recognize opportunities in seemingly negative situations.
. Become attuned to your own, others and your environment's natural cycles. You may not be acting in harmony with them.
. Concentrate on finishing what you have started and left undone, especially highly emotional situations and relationships left hanging.
