TIPS ON APPROACHING A DESIGN/BUILD PROJECT FOR YOUR HOME OR OFFICE - Deck Projects

Recently I have been asked to write a letter based on what to expect from a deck project. My company has been designing and building for 15 years and every spring I can expect to estimate at least three decks per week, designs and expectations are as diversified as the people themselves. Some people expect nothing more than to save cutting the grass for the summer and some look to turn heads and look at a deck project as an addition and extra living space.
For a homeowner who is planning to stay at their residence a deck can be looked upon as 25 year + investment and for people who may possibly plan to sell in 5 to 10 years, a deck can create a valuable appeal to a prospective buyer.
Try to do as much homework for your deck design as possible by collecting magazine pictures, weather it be a second story addition or a deck design, pictures can be invaluable to your designer. These pictures will be of even increased value to your builder if he does not have a design background.
When I go on an estimate I always ask for a budget. This allows to keep the design within range rather than guessing. Take the time to lay out some string to stake out the proposed deck area.
My first approach to designing a deck is to accommodate the existing landscape. Once the size and shape is determined I work on the elevation to create an easy access from the house, occasionally I find it necessary to do a knockout and install a sliding door.
Now for all the bells and whistles, consider angled boards, benches, planters, gazebos, wrap around stairs, enclosing the underneath to keep unwanted critters out. Weather may also be of consideration, latticework can keep prevailing winds at bay, awnings or lattice work to protect from the sun “Trust me on the Sunscreen”, or make accommodations for a possible hot tub.
Choose your builder well. Who will actually be doing the work? Remember your deck will only be as good as the material and the craftsperson who builds it.
