The Werewolf

And that was that. I followed Samantha out of the door and into the car that would be our vehicle into the dark night. Luckily, I had stashed away a familiar face in the back seat just in case things got a bit hairy.

In another part of town, a young man and his vivacious, pleasant girlfriend walked the streets of the frigidly cold, morbid dark night. They walked upon the sidewalk of the seemingly deserted streets, perhaps ignorant of the events of the preceding night, or just ignorant in consenting the advisory to not walk the streets at night.

“Ah, Julie, aren’t you glad we took a night stroll?” The young man asked, proudly arranging his high-school varsity jacket and breathing in a foggy breath of fresh night air. Young Julie clung her arms against his sleeve.

“I’m… just not sure of this, Bolton.”

“Aw, come on Julie. The air is fresh, the night is young, and hey, there’s a full moon out! It’s a beautiful night! All except for the cold… Look, are you cold? You need me to give you my jacket?”

He didn’t wait for her to answer. Being the gentleman that he was, he avidly took initiative to aid his ailing girlfriend, and covered her with insulated warmth from his freshly warm jacket.

“Thanks, Bolton, but… that’s not it. Didn’t you hear the reports last night?” She asked, her innocently bubbling eyes looking into his with a tinge of worry.

Bolton shook his head at the thought. “Aw, not that again. Come on, Julie. A werewolf? Seriously, do you think those things even exist? I mean look around! No one’s here, we won’t find kids around this part of the city. We can basically do whatever we want!” He said, smirking.

He stopped her, held her hands in his, and looked into her eyes.

“If you’re really that worried, I’ll protect you,” he said. She smiled and shyly looked away. He kissed her.

“Oh, Bolton…” she said.

The sound of slightly shuffling feet was heard from the midst of the unknown darkness.

Startled, the female looked away, and her breathing began to quicken.

“What was that?” She asked, looking around, her eyes now widened in anxiety.
Bolton looked around the nearly empty street except for a few inactive parked cars, and a few rows of stores on the other side.

“Was probably nothing… maybe just some kids in costumes or something,” Bolton consoled, for only one thing was on his mind.

“I thought… you said kids didn’t trick-or-treat around this part of town.”

“It was probably the wind… come on, no one’s around. Now where were we?”

“No, Bolton, I want to leave.”

“Come on…”

An eerie howl screeched and echoed through the isolated darkness of night, one that seemed to frighteningly bellow throughout the atmosphere towards the moon.

“All right, you win, let’s get outta here…” Bolton agreed.

He took her by the arm quickly, his heart rate pumping more rapidly, and he rushed her in the other direction of the direful scream.

But as they ran forward, the sound of scurrying footsteps, heavy footsteps, that amounted to four… continued right along with them.
