The Werewolf

The night was dark, a cold, howling wind bit against my stinging ears. I held my hands in my pocket as I walked to work. The full moon shone brightly in the darkened sky with black clouds covering the sparkling stars like a sheet of shadows. I was told to rendezvous with the infamous Samantha of the Daily Times. It sounded like an urgent call, so I somehow decided that I would see what was the matter.

“Did you see what happened last night?” Samantha asked, holding the paper in front of my fatigued face. I had just gotten back to work after a groggy night and morning that was caused by overworking through the hours for the many enduring nights before.

“Unfortunately no, but you don’t need to shove it into my face,” I said, grasping a hold of the paper to read.
“Hmm, this isn’t our paper…” I said.

“Dozens of strange, frightening scenes seemed to have taken place last night… and I wasn’t even there to get the scoop on them!” She angrily cried.

“How convenient, and this very night is Hallow’s Eve. A bit early isn’t it?”

That was just like Samantha… worried about her own career instead of anything else. But I began to read the paper to view anyway, out of sheer interest, to see what the ruckus was all about. However, what filled my eyes were bizarre headlines and scenes that could only be found in the realm of science fiction or horrific nightmares.

“Witnesses Claim Carnivorous Werewolf Devoured Townspeople?” I read the first major headline in utter disbelief.

“Check these out too…” Samantha explained, shoving at least six more newspapers my way. She most likely had been scoping out her competition.

“Scores of Bodies Found Mutilated in Dark Alleys, Strange Markings Found on Shriveled, Dehydrated Citizens’ Necks, High School Students Discovered Dead in Halls, Missing Cadavers Reported Stolen… What is all this?”

“Apparently the city’s gone mad over the past few nights, and we’re left out of the loop. We need to find a story quick! Hurry check out all the local areas near the crime scenes, there’s bound to be some leftovers!”

“Hey! Wait a minute! We can’t just waltz in on hazardous territory hoping that there just happens to be a freshly committed crime. Don’t you ever think of the people? We’ve got to take caution, get some help, and figure out what’s causing this mess.”

“Look, the city’s gone haywire. The useless law enforcement squad has got their hands tied up, and the only way justice will be served to the public is if we report about it!”

“But what if there’s no one left to report to?!”

“Look, I’m heading out right now for a story. You can either stay here, tag along on my lead towards the Werewolf sightings, or choose one of your own stories to follow. The choice is yours.”

I was never good at decisions on the spot. They always took me a great deal of thinking. So I decided to think for a bit, knowing that I was under considerable pressure, and choose in a relatively small time slot.

Finally, I came to a decision. I decided that I would go with Samantha to find leads on the Werewolf sightings.
