Hamster craze spreads in Thailand
BANGKOK (dpa) - Strong local demand, mainly from children and teenagers, is fuelling a craze for pet hamsters in Thailand, where more than 10,000 of the furry creatures are being snapped up each month, a news report said Tuesday. Anant Klangvitoon, founder and managing director of Bird Land, a pioneer in the burgeoning Thai hamster industry, said sales have been growing at an annual rate of 100 per cent.
"The boom for hamsters as small pets started in the Thai market a couple of years ago and this small animal is now becoming a popular pet among Thais, particularly children and teens," he said. Anant said his company, which breeds dwarf hamsters at its Bangkok farm, can barely keep up with the demand for the animals.
"We were exporting hamsters from our farm to Japan. Anyway, we have had to stop exports temporarily for about a year as we cannot breed enough hamsters to supply the local market," he said.

My hamster is half blinded and has been living like that for over a year now. I got her on Nov.9,2003 and the accident happened on Jan.11,2004. We also have rats. My sisters rat, Serenity, attacked my hamster and pulled her eye out. Strangely enough, Caramel didn't cry or squeal or anything. All she did was run around the room half blinded.
