Hamster are clean animals and being clean is important to them. They set up a special place where thay urinate and defecate and they groom themselves frequently and thoroughly. They also don't have any offensive body odor the way white mice, for instance do. Of course, feces and urine, as well as old food begin to smell after a while. The better and the more ofter you clean the cage, the less it will smell. The best place to put a hamster while cleaning is in an empty jar or pail.

Daily
Clean out the bathroom corner (with an old spoon or tiny trowel)

Weekly
Wash all accessories , such as food dish, seesaw, toys and branches with warm water. Scrub the water bottle with a bottle brush.

Twice a week
Change all the bedding.

Once a moth
Replace the sleeping nest . Wash the bottom of the cage with warm water

Important
Don't use any detergents when cleaning the cage. Warm water is perfectly good.
