This new version of Pokémon is a lot like the original Pokémon
Red and Blue games, except that it's based off the TV show
(But then the TV show is based off the game... what gives?).

Fortunatly, I was able to snag a copy of the Japanese version.
The challenging part about Yellow was that I knew not one
word of Japanese. So I had you use "cheat sheets" in order to
figure out what attack or what Pokémon is which. But since
Pokémon Yellow will be realeased soon, you won't need the
cheat sheets.

Anyway, there are a few major differences from Yellow
compared to Red and Blue. For starters:

Pikachu follows you around.

Yes, it does seem annoying,... but for some reason, it's a lot
better looking that you being by yourself.

You can talk to Pikachu.

This is one of the neat things about Pokémon Yellow. Pikachu
expresses his moods and conditions during a certain situation.

For example:
Pikachu is scared since he's in the Pokémon Tower.
Pikachu is sick since he's poisoned.
Pikachu is very happy because he's always happy.
Pikachu will also get very mad if you put him in Bill's PC.

I've lost count on how many different expressions that Pikachu
has.

The Pokémon are different (and better) looking.

??

All the Pokémon are a lot better looking, from Pidgey to
Mewtwo. They were changed to resemble their TV counterparts.
Even some of the human characters like Ash and Gary got a
make over. So did the gym leaders.
Since I only have about 70 some odd Pokémon, I can't put up
images of every single Pokémon in Yellow. But I'll see what I
can do.

You can get Charmander, Squirtle, and Bulbasaur without
the help of trading

Yep. Like in the TV show, Ash got the three starting Pokémon
not from Professor Oak, but out there, in the wild (but then the
three were really out wild).

To get Squirtle, you have to beat Sgt. Surge and then talk to
Officer Jenny in the middle of town.
To get Bulbasaur, find a person in Cerilian City that has a
Bulbasaur amd talk to her. After a few tries you'll get
Bulbasaur.
To get Charmander, walk north of Cerilian City, over the bridge
with the 5 or 6 trainers and head left to the long field of grass.
Talk to the guy in the field and after a few tries he'll give you
Charmander.

The Pokémon "Rotation" is different.

In Yellow, you won't find the same Pokémon in the same
places as you would have found them in Red/Blue. Unfortunaly,
you can't get all 150 Pokémon by yourself without trading by
yourself in Pokémon Yellow. For starters, you can't get another
Pikachu in the wild, nor will Pikachu allow itself to be evolved
to a Raichu. Oy.

The "rotation" is also different with the Gym leaders. The
Pokémon they use to battle you greatly matches the ones used
by the same Gym leaders in the TV show. For example, Koga
has Venonats and a Venomoth, just like in the TV show.

The entire Unknown Dungeon is different.

I don't know why, but the layout and everything about the
Unknown Dungeon (except for the fact that you can catch
Mewtwo in it) is different.

People who've played the Red or Blue version of Pokémon will
recognize that this isn't the regular entrance for the Unknown
Dungeon. Does this has to do with "Mewtwo Strikes Back"?

There's a new beach house south of Fuchsia City.

????

I have become familiar with the Pokémon TV show, and have
learned that the beach house is from an episode not aired in
America.

Major TV Characters

Other major players in the Pokémon TV show make a minor
appearence.

Nurse Joy & Nurse Chansey

Officer Jenny

These folk don't provide very much info (as far as I know).
Nurse Joy just replaces the other Pokémon Center lady. Officer
Jenny replaces any linguring police officer in the game (except
for the one where you get Squirtle from).

Oh yeah.... Team Rocket!

Yeah... I guess everyone knows by now that Team Rocket will
make an appearence in Pokémon Yellow. Four appearences
actually.

You can find Team Rocket at:

? Mt. Moon, at the exit
? The Game Corner, right
before Giovanni
? The Pokémon Tower, right
before Mr. Fuji
? The Sliph Company building,
right before Giovanni

The problem here is that you only see Jesse and James at
those 4 times, and nowhere else. Oh well.

Disappointments with Pokémon Yellow:

Except for minor additions, the game is
no different than Pokémon Red & Blue.
The story and the map is more or less the
same.
Misty and Brock don't follow you like in
the TV show. They just stay in their
respectable gyms.
Togepi is not in it Pokémon Yellow, but
then it's in the TV show.
Team Rocket makes only 4 appearences
in the entire game, and not almost all the
time like in the TV show. No fair!

Conclusion:

Pokémon Yellow is an OK game. Not much different than Red &
Blue, but still good none-the-less. I advise that the only
people who should buy this game are people who don't already
have a Pokémon game, or for Pikachu lovers. Otherwise, just
wait for Pokémon Gold & Silver to come out.
