Catfish-A catfish is defined by it's barbels or wiskers found below the mouth they are actually finely tuned sencers for finding prey. Their are three main typs of cat fish the Channel, blue, and flathead catfish. Channel cats-(ictalurus punctatus) Channels aresilvery gray to coppery brown with white bellys.Although once confined to the mississippi dranage they now live in evey state but alaska. The anal fin of the channel cat is rounded and has 24-29 rays. The juveniles have a peppering of spots on their skin that will fade in adulthood. They also have a deeply forked tail. THe world-record channel catfish is a 58-pounder from Lake moultrie in south carolina, caught in 1964. Blue catfish-(ictalurus furcatus) Blue cats varyin colar from a slateblue to grayish brown on their back, and sides. THeir anal fin is strait, and has 30 or more rays. Blue cats occur in atleast 30 states fromIowa, tosouth texas, andfrom nebraska to North Carolina. The world-record Blue cat was caught in 1998 from the cumberland river in Tennessee, and weighed 112 pounds. Flathead catfish-(pylodictis olivaris)The back, and sides are a brownish yellowish colar. The head is flat, and at an angle hints the name. They live from NewMExico to Pennsylvania, and from Mexico to North dakota. Catfish will take many baits sutch as minnows, bluegill, Bullheads, worms,crawfish,mussels,catalpaworms, frogs, toads, Salamanders,leaches,cutbait,dip bait,sponge bait, tube bait, and chunk bait they also can be taken onshrimp, cheese, hotdogs, dogfood, bread, chickenlivers, and even ivory soap. peanutbutter bait mix peanutbutter, melted cheese,flour,and raw egg untill it is goey enough to stay on a hook Add flour to make a dough. If it doesn't stay on the hook thar shread cotton balls and mix them in. Cheesy doughbait mix limburger cheese, hamberger meat, garlic powder, and flower into a doughy consistency. minnow or shad dip bait Allow a mess of mashed minnows or shad to decay in a buryed plastic freezer container. (dont use glass because it will explode)A small sponge on a hook saturated with this bait works well to attract chanell catfish as do the others. Trotline chunk bait Mix yellow cornmeal flour anise, oil and sardines packed in oil. Add small amounts of water to form a dough. drop into boiling water for 3 minuts remove, let drain then allow to cool.
