"C'mon, Interceptor, find Shadow!" Relm said to the large animal. Interceptor began walking in circles, seemingly chasing his tail. The Warriors all stood around the stream that Shadow had battled Zerbaron and his cronies; of course, the group had no idea that Shadow had battled here yet. Celes looked at the scuff marks in the grass with interest. She knew a battlefield when she saw one.
"I think Interceptor is tracing Shadow's movements," the ex-general commented.
"Then why is he chasing his tail?" Locke asked.
"He's not," Celes answered, "he's tracing Shadow's movements when he was fighting." Celes pointed at the scuff marks in the grass. "Those marks are footprints. See how they are positioned? As if the owners of these various footprints were getting ready for a fight. Two men, probably armored, fell at these two spots. A bigger man must've died here, on this spot." Celes pointed to the spot where Zerbaron died.
"See this set of footprints?" she asked, "They are not as deep as the others. This set of prints are Shadow's."
Interceptor barked a few times, turned, and began running, obviously finding Shadow's trail once more. The others quickly followed.
"Dr. Genni, what is the status of the crystal blade?" Reeken asked the short, old scientist in front of him.
"Take a look for yourself," Genni told him, pointing to a readout station.
They were both in the laboratory section of Vector. In front of both of them was a large glass tube containing a greenish liquid. The crystal blade of Chaos was floating inside the tube. A computer console in front of the tube showed the readouts of the blade:
MAIN COMPOSITION: crystal; depleted uranium coating; magicite core
CUTTING POWER: 90%
DAMAGE CAPABILITY: 97%
BATTLE COMPATIBILITY: 100%
POWER RATING: 5,000,637,910,300
As Reeken read the readouts, he noticed that the blade's composition included a magicite core. A magicite core!
"Magicite..." Reeken mumbled, "Dr. Genni, assemble your best scientists. I want you to see just how much magic is in the magicite core. It could be very valuable to us. Maybe this magicite core can grant its user magical powers, just like an Esper."
"Yes, sir," Genni said, turning for the elevators to get to the scientists quarters.
"Magicite," Reeken whispered.
"Man, I'm pooped! Let's rest," Setzer complained, sitting down.
It was a beautiful night, with the stars out and shining, and a full moon high in the sky.
"Good idea, Setzer," Mog said, plopping down on the ground.
"Gau, gau!!" agreed Gau, also sitting down.
The others followed suit, each one sitting down on the ground. They were all sitting in a circle inside a clearing, legs aching from days of hard traveling. They had been on Shadow's trail for five days now, but still haven't come close to finding him. They all knew they needed his stealth and expertise in combat to succeed in this mission, but that Shadow was beginning to be a pain!
"Hey, Celes, you never told me why you and Shadow were in the Phoenix Cave," Locke asked the ex-general.
"I thought it was obvious," Celes replied, "Shadow and I were after the jeweled hilt and the moonstone pommel."
"I didn't see you take any hilt or any pommel back at the cave," Locke said.
Celes chuckled to herself, reached down the front of her chain mail dress, and pulled out a hilt encrusted with gems and jewels of all types. "You're not the only one who's sneaky, Locke," she told him, giggling.
"Damn, it's getting cold," Shadow mumbled to himself, pulling his black cloak tighter around him, trying to block the chill wind. He was hundreds of miles away from Vector and Albrook, and moving north, where winter was setting in. He decided to camp near the frozen lake that was several miles ahead. There were no trees to block his view, only a few snow mounds, and he could see that the lake was almost completely frozen. He felt alone out here, in the knee deep snow, and he found himself worrying about his friends.
He didn't have a lot of time to be sentimental, however, considering that ten soldiers dressed in armor had appeared from behind the snow mounds, and were advancing on him, pulse rifles aimed for his heart.
Locke had taken his turn as sentry after everyone else had gone to sleep. He nearly nodded off himself, but was brought back to full consciousness when he felt a delicate hand touch his shoulder. He didn't even think, he just reacted. Locke grabbed the hand, straightened his back, and hurled the person who touched him to the ground. That's when he realized who he had thrown.
"Uh, sorry about that, Celes," he said dumbly to the ex-general, who was lying on her back, sprawled out from the throw. Locke knelt beside her, helping her back up. Their faces were close, their noses almost touching. Again Locke didn't think, he just reacted, pressing his lips against hers, only reacting. Celes would have killed any other man for pulling a stunt like that, but instead she merely returned the kiss.
The ten armored men approached, weapons armed and ready. One of the men opened fire on Shadow, ripping a gash on the ninja's left leg. Shadow ducked, rolled, then stood back up, twenty feet behind the ten men. The soldiers opened fire on the ninja again, firing repeatedly. Shadow, to his credit, dodged at least half of the shots, but in the end, the sniper technology built into the pulse rifles were to much for him, and he was shot multiple times, in various parts of his body, most of the shots burning holes into his chest. Shadow went down in a heap, blood splurting from the multiple wounds on his person. The ten men picked up the bleeding assassin, stored him in a truck that they had hidden behind a rather large snow mound, and drove off, back to Vector, their mission completed: capture Shadow.
