Final Fantasy VI
Chapter two: Reeken

The City of Vector....
Nearly half a decade ago, this city was the capital of the Empire. Then the Warriors came: Terra, Sabin, Edgar, Mog, Setzer, Locke, Celes, and others. They destroyed Vector's Magitek facilities. They freed the remaining Espers. They destroyed everything that Ghestal had worked for. Now, a new Emperor had taken to power: Reeken Ghestal, grandson of the former Emperor Ghestal.
When the Warriors came, Ghestal had his grandson, his only living blood relative, hidden underground, in an abandoned mine shaft that had been constructed before Ghestal began his search for the Espers. Young Reeken had stayed in the mines below Vector ever since the Cataclysm. The mines were well-stocked, so he never went hungry, and there were even a few other people in the mines. After Kefka was killed, Reeken decided he would rebuild Vector and create a new Empire.
As the reconstruction of the new city of Vector was nearing completion, he created a cover-up for his secret plans of creating a new Empire: he was rebuilding Vector to restore trade routes lost in the Cataclysm. His story was actually quite logical; the cities and towns of the region all crossed paths at Vector. Since the terrain was treacherous and monster-infested, the rebuilding of Vector seemed to be a good idea.
Reeken was planning on amassing a secret army to utilize in his takeover of the world, but then he found Ghestal's private library in the dead Emperor's room. Ghestal had quite a collection of books concerning Espers, the Wars, Magitek, and one interesting topic in particular: Chaos. After reading about Chaos, Reeken began an all-out investigation, hiring bounty hunters and sellswords to find the pieces of Chaos.

"ZERBARON!!!" Reeken yelled, calling for his lieutenant. Reeken was a rather short young man, only five feet tall, weighing only one hundred pounds, but was a marvelous fighter with impressive combat abilities both in martial arts and weapons. He ran a slender hand through his short, close cropped, sand-colored hair, waiting impatiently for Zerbaron.
A tall, muscular man burst into the room. He was quite a contrast to Reeken; seven feet tall, five hundred pounds of muscle, and a fighter with above average combat abilities.
"Zerbaron, what is the status report of our bounty hunters?" Reeken asked the tall man.
"Oh Marvelous One, six of the twenty bounty hunters you hired are dead, killed by monsters during their search. Two of them, Celes and Shadow, both having worked for the old Empire before, have turned AWOL and traitor on us. The others are still searching for the remaining two pieces." Zerbaron said.
"The ninja, Shadow, is a dangerous one. Take your best men to eliminate him. As for the female ex-general, bring her to me. She still has to pay for her crimes against the old Empire." Reeken ordered.
Zerbaron bowed to his master, turned, and left the room, leaving Reeken to his thoughts.
*Celes will obviously try to contact her friends. I will have to deal with her in my own way. The other Warriors will have to be dealt with as well, if they manage to link up with Celes. Shadow, on the other hand, might just get away from Zerbaron. It would be most prudent to get him on my side if he does avoid Zerbaron. No one has ever defeated Zerbaron, except me. If Shaodw can defeat my tall lieutenant, I might just enlist the ninja as Zerbaron's replacement.* Reeken pondered his next moves carefully; if he screwed up just one bit, it would all be over, and all he had worked for would be destroyed...just like Ghestal's.

The Warriors had arrived in Albrook, using the airship, the Falcon, as their means of transportation, earlier that day. The Falcon needed to be resupplied, and the Warriors needed a place to spend the night, since the Falcon was also undergoing renovations as well as restocking its supplies. Renovations would be completed by noon the next day, the supplies had been restocked, and the crew was enjoying a short vacation, since the Warriors were heading for Vector and wouldn't be coming back for a few days.
Shadow had crept out of the inn he and the reunited Warriors had checked into. The ninja moved stealthily up to the inn's rooftop, and sat down against the shingles.
He still wore his mask, had worn it the whole day, he knew he should remove the thing, but he just couldn't find the inner strength to face the world without it. He knew that Gogo had similar feeling about hiding his (her?) identity. Neither of them could face the light of day, or the dark of night, without a mask to hide behind.
He thought of the little girl sleeping in the inn, Relm, and how Interceptor took an instantly liking to her. Interceptor had taken good care of the child when he was gone, and Relm took even greater care for her new four-legged companion.
With the comforting thought that Interceptor would take care of the Warriors, and that his friends would defend Interceptor with their lives, Shadow crept down off the roof, made his way to the docks, and stowed away on a cargo ship that was leaving that very night for Maranda, not knowing how complicated his life was going to get.
