Nightmares: Prolouge

This fanfic doesn't have as much action as my last fanfic, 'C and Z', but its very creepy. It explores Cloud's darkest fears and worst nightmares. It would be easier to understand this story if you read 'C and Z' first, but, I'm not your mother, so you make the decision. If you want action, read 'C and Z'; you want real creepy
Resident Evil type of a fanfic with all the characters from Final Fantasy Seven in it? This is the one you want. Now, on with the story.....

Nightmares: Part One

The battered friends finally earned a much needed vacation. The final battle with the REAL Sephiroth and getting Zack's memory back was a tiring ordeal. The friends all went to Tifa's Seventh Heaven Bar in the now fully reconstructed Sector Seven. Tifa had added an inn to the Bar.
The friends all got free room and board; the vacation lasted for a good two weeks but, of course, work had to be done: Reeve had to rig up trade routes to North Corel and get the now-valuable coal into Midgar (since almost all the Mako had been used by Aeris to get Lifestream to destroy Meteor), Barret had to go back to North Corel to reopen the mines and see Marlene, Tifa had to keep her bar up and running, Cid had been hired by Barret to use his airship to transport the coal to Midgar and other towns, Vincent wanted privacy and returned to the Nibel Mountains, Yuffie continued to 'borrow' materia from other travellers, and as for Cloud and Zack....
Zack returned to Gongaga Village to visit his parents, wanting to show them that the cocky, excitable youth who left had grown up and was more mature. He also wanted to tell them about Aeris.....
Cloud, although his feelings for Tifa were strong and true, just couldn't bear to let her see that he had never fully recovered from his ordeal with Sephiroth. He just couldn't let her see that he was still insane to a degree. He never let anyone in on the fact that he was still crazy; he acts as normal as anyone else. Not even Tifa, who seemed to know his soul so very well, couldn't see through the calm facade, the lie that he had recovered.
*Lie...?* Cloud thought, sneaking out of the Seventh Heaven Bar and onto the railroad station's entrance platform, *I'm always lying.... Always living in an illusionary world....like the first time...*
Looking back, gazing at the large lights with the words 'Seventh Heaven' on them, Cloud felt the pangs of guilt returning. *I'm sorry, Tifa. I love you. I have to disappear to protect you. Goodbye.......* Cloud stepped on board the train, heading to the surface of Midgar.....

Cloud looked back at the city that started his trip down the road to insanity. He never wanted to return to Midgar. Ever. He didn't want to live through the nightmare again.....
Cloud was back at the spot Zack was shot at, the start of his lies began here.... He left his only true friend to die here. He felt the dull ache in his abdomen, where a confused Zack had impaled him. *I deserved it...* Cloud thought, *I left him here to die! Why didn't I realize he was alive at the time? Why?*
The rain started coming down.
Cloud didn't care.
The cliff started to turn to mud.
Cloud didn't care.
The cliff-turned-mud collapsed, sending Cloud and a pile of mud on top of him.
Cloud didn't care as he fell. He just wanted his tormented life to end.

*Where....am...I....?* Cloud thought.
"You're here," a soft voice told him, reading his mind.
*Where's 'here' ???*
" 'Here' is here," the voice replied.
Cloud opened his eyes and looked around, realizing he wasn't buried in mud, wasn't even lying on the ground; he was standing--no, floating--in the air. The sky was bright blue, the clouds floating here and there. The sun was nowhere in sight. Neither was the ground!
Realizing his distress, the disembodied voice explained, "Welcome to your Afterlife, Cloud Strife,"
