profile :: TransWorld Skateboarding
June 26, 2001 - I first met Transworld Skateboarding in my friend Katy's bathroom, sitting quietly next to a bar of Avocado soap and an issue of Photographer. It was like Thrasher, similar enough to be called a brother, but the photography was less guerilla, and the layout was definitely slicker. I read the thing cover to cover, or near enough before Katy banged on the door asking if I needed some paper towels. I've always wondered why people leave reading material in their bathrooms, knowing exactly where people's hands are going while they're reading your magazines, but that's a whole different subject altogether, and one more appropriate for Maxim, or at least IGN Cube's letters section.
I had an ongoing relationship with the magazine from then on, always by reading it off of people's coffee tables, bathrooms, and kitchen counters. I loved it, and wondered why it hadn't been picked up for a videogame license when every other Skateboard related franchise had been snapped up -- even MTV. What makes TransWorld even more perfect for a franchise title is that it's more than just skateboarding, though -- it covers all ways to travel fast and crazy, including Surf, Snowboarding, BMX, Ski, Motocross, and more. Over a dozen magazines and related sites and videos make for a major player. Finally Infogrames has answered the call, and stepped up with three completely different games covering action sports, snowboarding, skateboarding, and surfing. Someone had to take away Activision's O2 thunder, and Infogrames is big enough to do just that.
The development team behind this Tony Hawk killer are none other than Barking Dog, also known as "the guys with the really great T-Shirts." Barking Dog is most well-known for its expansion to Homeworld entitled Cataclysm, but this time around they're keeping things well within Earth's pesky gravity. Not that you won't be fighting it each step of the way with your own troop of official skateboarders. Stars in this game include Brian Anderson, Bob Burnquist, Kenny Hughes, Rick McCrank, Colin McKay, Mike Vallely, Heath Kirchart, Matt Mumford, Arto Saari, Daewon Song, Danny Way and Jeremy Wray. So if you were wondering about exactly where Bob Burnquist went from TH3, now you know.
Like any modern skateboarding title, tricks for kids is the name of the game, so you'll pardon any comparisons to Thrasher, Tony Hawk, or MTV for that matter. You'll be pulling off tricks and accomplishing level goals in order to unlock secrets, skills, and new levels, but Barking Dog has found their own way to keep things fresh and new by the introduction of photo ops and interactive characters.
Next-Generation seems to mean more junk running around on screen, and in the case of skateboarding titles, it means no more running around blissfully empty environments, minding your own merry business. Besides simple traffic, TransWorld promises to put you against cops, dogs, and pedestrians as you try to make the biggest combos and tricks. Cops will try to bust you for trying to ruin public property, dogs will snap at you for trying to get into their yard/alley/area, and pedestrians will find amazing ways to step into your path at just the wrong moment. The good side to all this interactivity is that you'll be able to grind more than ever before, because the levels are filled with objects that react dynamically to your tricks. There will be 10 different environments in the final version of the game, including locations like Barcelona, Rio, Vancouver, London, New York, LA, a multi-floor indoor skatepark. No word on if any official skateparks or real-life environments are being used. What we do know is that Barking Dog is already doing a personal wish of mine, namely the suburban backyard course, where you'll be running around in backyard ramps and pools, hopping fences and avoiding angry dogs and neighbors. I can't wait.
Three different modes have been revealed so far: Tag the Level, Nail your Goals, and Skateboarding Magazine. Tag the Level has you "interacting" with your environment like never before, because you'll literally have to leave your mark on each area to accomplish your goals. That means knocking over fire hydrants, kicking off of phone booths, knocking over tables, grinding cars, smashing windshields, and generally being a public nuisance. Jet Grind what? They've got nothing on you. Nail Your Goals is more traditional, with score and trick based goals that will help you unlock later levels and secrets. Skateboarding Magazine takes from the same page as Amped, where you'll be looking for TransWorld photographers on a map to show off in front of. Make sure you do a perfect trick in the right position, and you might find yourself a little more famous.
Don't you love that hard drive? You'll be able to create your own playlists from the music library in the game, giving you the chance to finally make your own perfect skate tape, instead of having to cruise in fear of when "annoying 80's song redone as ironic punk anthem" will come along to ruin your groove. It's not just your ears that are getting the glamour treatment -- the visuals, while still early, show lots of promise. Clothing is actually reactive to your skater, instead of just a pasted on texture, and the levels are filled with dynamic lighting, particle effects, and true physics. Already the detail is competitive with NeverSoft's TH3.
Best of all, even your friends will be able to play, without having to wait until you leave the room to go to the bathroom, er, read TransWorld. Though online play isn't planned for the game, you'll be able to take on three other gamers for a four person multiplayer match, which is a good pacifier for those of us hoping for a little online skating. Skateboarding is the earliest of the three TransWorld games, but is still slated for a tentative release at the end of this year. If Tony Hawk 2x doesn't fill your four-wheeled needs, then maybe running from the fuzz for doing a wall slide on somebody's aluminum siding will.
