Parent company plans media download service, and TV set top box
Tulip Computers announces alongside Ironstone Partners today that they are resurrecting the age-old "Commodore 64" (C64) brand name through a new television set top box. Dubbed the "C64 Direct-to-TV", this mini game console is like Apex Digital's ApeXtreme and Infinium Labs' Phantom plug-and-play TV consoles, although for the time being it only plays 30 classic C64 games pre-installed into the device.
"The C64 Direct-to-TV unit is the natural evolution of the currently huge demand for retro video games and will set a new standard for excellence, with superior sound, graphics and gameplay experiences over the products currently on sale. With 30 games pre-installed on the device, the C64 Direct-to-TV product offers significantly more than its competitors. Millions of these games are sold in the past. Included in the device are the classic Games series from Epyx including Summer Games, Winter Games, World Games and the seminal California Games, which arguably created the extreme sports video games genre."
Meanwhile, MCV notes that the revival of the C64 brand also coincides with the launch of Tulip's media download service, available at the new C64 site. Similiar to Apple's iTunes service, the new C64 service label allows user to download music and games for a fee:
"Music costs E0.99 a track, while the games service offers a variety of subscriptions, starting from E4.99 to download, emulate and play five old Commodore 64 games from the likes of Epyx."
You may have realized by now that the Tulip in the spotlight here is in fact the very same European computer supplier that pushed the Commodore 64 home computer all those years ago during the 1980s. Many of you might remember it particularly for its games. :)
