Speed Devils
Ubi's port of the PC racer looks
to make some serious tracks.
June 4, 1999
O.K., I have come to a quick conclusion
with regards to the DC. If you are a
racing fan, you needn't look any further
than Sega's wonder machine, as the
addition of Ubi Soft's impressive Speed
Devils is the icing on one of the best
looking cakes I have seen since the early
days of the PlayStation.
A slightly modified port of the PC game
Speed Busters, SD was born to be on
the Dreamcast. A console racer at heart,
the game is pretty damned fast, but at the
same time, the track design is light-hearted, creative and varied enough to
keep you interested.
The visuals are still being tweaked, but even at this point the game looks
quite impressive. The cars feature a high level of detail and the tracks are
alive with interactive elements. The Vegas track, for example, features
both aliens amidst the desert areas and a quick tear through the neon sign
graveyard. They are all extremely long and full of surprises, rivaling the
likes of EA's Beetle Adventure Racing.
At press, Ubi was still in doubt as to the possibility of Net play, despite
the fact that PC version on which it is based abused it like no tomorrow.
Hopefully Sega will get the specs out on the modem in the near future so
the developers can make some headway to this end
.
Regardless, Speed Devils is shaping up to quite impressive. Easily near
the top of my list for the best games of show, you can expect to hear a
good deal more on this one in the coming weeks.
