Resident Evil 3:
Nemesis

Brand new screen-shots and
details have been added to our
E3 impressions. Don't miss out.

May 21, 1999

Update 5-21-'99:
"The horror, the horror…" whispered a
depraved Marlon Brando in the Viet
Nam movie Apocalypse Now. Had
Resident Evil arrived prior to the movie,
Brando may have seen things in a
different, darker, more brooding way.
He may have said, "They're alive!
They're alive!" and we would have
known exactly what he meant.

We have new info on this wonderfully
disturbing game. In Nemesis, there are
two "tyrant" characters, who actually will
pursue the heroine through the game. The
tyrants wear mysterious long black coats
(Oh brother, I hope they're not trench
coats) and are altogether more capable
than the enemies in the first two games.
They can actually pick up and throw
your character, rendering them doubly
dangerous. Their advantages over your
character are incredible strength and
speed.

In addition to these tyrant characters,
one of which is likely to be the character
Nemesis, Resident Evil's graphics have
improved in many ways. The character
modeling is vastly improved over its
predecessor - Capcom claims that the
combination of new, detailed textures
and a higher polygon count give the game
a look that rivals the Dreamcast version.

First impressions E3expo update:
Several of Capcom's most impressive
games were on display on the E3
showfloor, including the PlayStation's
Dino Crisis and the Dreamcast's
Powerstone. With a strong legacy behind
it, the Resident Evil series has a massive
army of fans who already love the game
and desire more. More zombies, more
gore, more suspense and surprise, wilder
situations, and more quizzical puzzles.
Resident Evil Nemesis delivers on all of
these fronts with a subtle kind of nuance
that's noticeable only after 15 minutes of
play, and not before. (OK, technically
maybe even five minutes into it the
changes are noticeable.)

What's changed in Nemesis is multifold,
but the biggest alteration is that it's
harder. First off, Jill is stronger and had different moves. In the previous games, the star characters could shove, hit and kick, but here they move faster and with more force. There's a good reason for that, too. The antagonistic force of zombies is overall much more terrifying in their numbers and in their strength. For instance, when Jill approaches a short alleyway, she will see a fence holding back an army of zombies. The number of zombies on the screen at one time is greater than ever. Players will see as many as seven or eight, possibly even 10 on screen at one time. Getting back to the character movement for one last note - Jill is capable of approaching areas like stairs with more smooth movement. There is no need to stop and alter your motion when approaching a staircase, Jill will simply walk straight down them in one swift motion. But let's get serious here and move on to the zombies. Though its sounds funny, or even obsessive, one of the more subtle changes in the zombies is that they are all different. Some are fat, others skinny. There are female and male zombies this time around, too. And when they appear on screen together, it's a sight to see. What's more is that the zombies are different speeds, too. Most resemble the zombies of games past, but a handful of them are speedy, and will move just short of a jog toward you. Last but not least in the impressionable category is the Nemesis. The Nemesis is an all-powerful boss zombie who's huge. He's almost 8 feet tall, and built like a pro weight lifter. More to the matter is the weapon he carries an infinitely loaded bazooka. Yes, friends, it's a boss zombie who's powerful and carries a kick-ass bazooka. Nemesis is not invulnerable, but he's difficult to defeat, to say the least. Nemesis crashes through a window to attack you with an aggression unseen in previous Resident Evil games. This zombie is smart and fast. In fact, he's faster than you. Much. Nemesis will attack you with his bazooka, firing at you or swinging it at you, and then as the race for a doorway begins, he'll RUN AFTER YOU. Damn! That's right, he'll catch up to you and take you out, he'll follow you to the doorway and then, as you open and close it behind you, he'll open it up and run after you. Yes, yes, in short he's the uber-zombie a bastard creation of new proportions, and he's ready to kick you ass. Graphically, little changes have been implemented, but honestly, the game looks much like Resident Evil 2. Noticeable changes can be seen in the weather and in the changing of day to night and back again. It rains and it clears up, it gets cloudy, too. These little things are cool, and alter the feel and mood of the game, but don't necessarily affect the gameplay directly. Those who say that Capcom has lost it have lost it themselves. Capcom is rocking the last year of the century harder than it ever has. With Dino Crisis, a totally original thriller in the adventure genre, and the 1999 release of Resident Evil Nemesis, the third in the RE series, plus a slew of other fantastic titles (such as Street Fighter Alpha 3), Capcom fans should be partying like it's 1999. Sure, there was reason to worry, at one point. Codename Veronica was introduced last year in Tokyo as a pure Dreamcast title, and the Capcom announcement that RE3 would appear on PlayStation (at last year's E3) looked like ashes in the wind in October (at the Fall Tokyo Game Show). Given R&D Director Yoshiki Okamoto's lust for technology, and Dreamcast fulfilling that dream - at least at the time - all seemed doomed for PS owners. But that's just history now. After Nemesis' confirmation in April, the screen-shots were only a matter of time. Now, thanks to PSM, Imagine's independent PlayStation magazine, which has the first shots, we have them, too. Taking place 24 hours before and 24 hours after, Resident Evil 2, this split prequel/sequel fills gamers in with details of Jill Valentine, who starred in the first of the series. Jill is rendered unconscious halfway through this new story, and is woken up 24 hours after Resident Evil 2, where the rest of the game takes place. Kind of cool, actually, but a little confusing at first. Gamers will get the whole Resident Evil package again - graphically, gameplay-wise, and through waves of sheer horror, but better than before. Graphically, Nemesis brings the prerendered backgrounds into play, but they appear far more detailed than ever. Explosions and other particle effects also seem to have been improved. Additionally, Jill appears to have another outfit. There's not much more to tell at this point. Other than we're sure the game's going to bring home suspense and fright better than ever. Come E3, we'll have a Niagara-like outpouring of our first impressions of the game as we PLAY it for the first time! Woooo-hoooooo, my knees are shaking!
