2nd Annual Interactive Achievement Awards
May 17, 1999
After the flood of excitement following the first day of E3 adventures, the biggest
names in the video game industry gathered at the Variety Arts Theater in
downtown Los Angeles for the 1999 Interactive Achievement Awards. This
event is very similar to the film industry's Academy Awards, and for
many video game developers it is one of the most exciting nights of the year.
These awards are more special than most because the voting is done exclusively
by active participants in the video game industry. Only members of the
Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences are allowed to vote, so winners are
assured that they have earned the respect of their peers 1998 inductee to the
Academy's Hall of Fame Shigeru Miyamoto received an unscheduled work-out
as he ran to and from the stage collecting Zelda's hoard of Achievement
Awards. The Nintendo 64 nearly swept the console
categories thanks to Mr. Miyamoto's masterpiece and other gems of the
Nintendo universe. Celebrity presenters were on hand to distribute the honors,
including Sugar Ray Leonard, Zachary Ty Bryan and rapper/game fan Coolio.
Mr. Miyamoto presented the 1999 Hall of Fame honor to Sid Meier,
grandfather of the strategy genre and creator of the wildly successful Civilization.

Kyle, Stan, Cartman and Kenny are too young to drive, but that's not going to stop
Acclaim from producing a racing game starring the foul-mouthed youngsters. After the
success of last year's hilarious first-person shooter, those clever folks at Acclaim realized
that they'd be more stupid than Cartman's mom if they passed up their chance to make a
sequel.MORE WCW Mayhem Special Event If there is one word to describe E3, that
word would be "big." The booths are big,
the games are big, and at the Electronic Arts booth, even the people were big.To start the
buzz about their upcoming game WCW Mayhem, EA invited Goldberg and Diamond
Dallas Page to compete for the first-ever Mayhem Championship Belt. The sweating and
grunting took place in a ring located directly in the middle of their booth.MORE Sprocket
