Countdown: Vampires
A very early look at Bandai's
take on the Resident Evil series.
June 9, 1999
One of the most mysterious PlayStation
games we've ever received at IGNPSX
arrived at the office a couple weeks ago.
A plain manilla envelope addressed to
me landed on my desk from Bandai
USA. Other than the four PlayStation
games, but one we heard nothing about.
On the disc, scrawled with a black
Sharpie pen, were the words
"Countdown: Vampires." No fact sheet,
no release date, no nothing. We at least
deduced, from a phonecall with Bandai
that Countdown: Vampires is a game that
the company will be releasing early next
year, but the game is so early that only a
game engine is currently available.
With that out of the way, we popped in
the disc. Bandai wasn't kidding -- what
the current version shows is a game
engine similar to Resident Evil (saying
that this game was a blatant ripoff of
Resident Evil would be too cruel, so we'll
refrain). You're immediately placed in the
middle of a pack of zombies. Currently,
the AI is limited the zombies just stand
around waiting for you to nail them with
your gun, in exactly the same fashion as
you would in Resident Evil: aim and
shoot.
The version we have also only has two
rooms to explore. There is no story, no
introduction just a game engine that
features polygonal characters on top of
prerendered backgrounds. But even the
characters have a very early look to them
they animate very stiffly. But hey, this is
an early version, and we're hopeful that
as the game progresses deeper into
development, the graphics will end up
more polished.
Well, that's where we stand on
Countdown: Vampires so far. Enjoy the
screenshots.
