| From Me to You |
Hi. I know exactly what you are going through. I know that you have heard that from people who have never had cancer, but trust me, I do know what it feels like. You were just a normal teenager, going to school and hanging out with your friends. Then, when you go to the doctor for a rutine checkup, something is very wrong. You could have a tumor, or lukeimia. But they won't know for sure unless they operate. So you get the operation done and the results are in.
You have cancer. It kinda sounds cool because you aren't really sure what cancer is. But then they start you on a "map" of chemo, maybe radiation, and maybe a bone marrow or stem cell transplant. They give you a broviac or a chemoport that is implanted inside of you and leads directly to your heart. If you get a broviac, you need to flush it with a heparin solution and keep a dressing on it and you can't get it wet. This is so they don't have to give you a needle every time you need chemo. A Port is the same thing, only, it is completely under your skin and you can get it wet, but you need just one poke everytime you get chemo or bloodwork.
So your treatment has started. You feel like throwing up all the time, and you can't eat, you get really skinny really fast and you start smelling like a hospital. Your bedroom even looks like a hospital because of all the syringes, needles, sharps containers, bedadine and alchol swabs.
You loose your hair, you have to miss school (which isn't soo bad), and you can't hang out with your friends. You can't see your friends because your blood count will be too low and if you catch a cold from them, you might die.
You start getting used to the rutines and don't miss your friends as much, but you also feel alone. You ask questions like why me? and will this ever end? am i the only teenager with cancer? You have cancer just because. That's the reason. It's nothing you did. Trust me. At first I thought that i had cancer because I was a bad person. You get cancer because you can handle it. God gives you cancer for a reason. And, yes, it will end eventually. After you're in remission, you might not be able to remember the whole time that you were in treatment because you were high on drugs, and you kinda want to forget stuff like that.
Are you the only teen with cancer? No, you're not. But it feels like it. Were-ever you get your treatment, there will mostly be babies, little kids and old people. There are no support groups for you. There are some for your parents, but it seems that there is no support for you.
That's why i started this page. YOU ARE NOT ALONE. Keep on fighting, because we can win this battle.
Don't worry. Things will be the same eventully, but you might feel more mature and aware of topics that only adults deal with. If you want to be in contact with another teen with cancer, please see my PenPals page. I am with you. I know that you can beat this because i have beaten 30% chances of not surviving. There is a way. Trust me. It's better for you in the end.
