Story behind the 'ole Toyota. My late Grandfather, "Pa" bought the FJ55 brand new from Pinehurst Toyota. He affectionately called it the "Tyote" (rhymes with coyote). Pa did his best to destroy the rugged wagon, but in the end the Japenese technology survived. The beast has its original power plant, a tank-like Chevorlet In-line six (still under 60k original miles). I opted to take the factory tires off to add oversized beach tires.
I drove the Iron Pig down to the Outer Banks several times before opting to trailer it down to both Hatteras and Ocracoke Island. It performed admirably on the OBX beachs and that's really where it shines with its low torque power. On the road is an altogether different matter. One can barely have a coversation at 55mph. Remember it's only a 3 speed! While I've enjoyed the years in the Cruiser, it was high time for a change, so I've added a new stallion to the pasture.
Thanks for the memories "Tyote"!
