On January 31 ANOTHER Kennedy had a VERY bad day.
A Connecticut judge found that the nephew of the late U.S. Sen. Robert Kennedy should be tried as an adult on charges of murdering a neighbor, Martha Moxley, in 1975, when both were 15.
Michael Skakel is the son of Rushton Skakel, whose sister, Ethel, married Robert Kennedy.
Skakel, 40, was indicted over a year ago on charges that in October 1975, he fatally beat Moxley with a golf club (a six iron. Did he pick the right club for the distance?) After beating her he allegedly stabbed her in the neck with the club's broken shaft.
Judge Maureen Dennis found that there was sufficient evidence to prosecute Skakel for murder.
The defense argued that Skakel should be tried as a juvenile, since he was only 15 years old at the time of the murder. If that argument had been accepted by the court, and if Shakel were convicted, it would have been possible that he would not have to serve any time in prison. But if tried and convicted as an adult, he could receive life.
Gregory Coleman, one of the prosecution's witnesses, testified that Skakel had said: "I am going to get away with murder. I am a Kennedy."
BREAKING NEWS!:
Coleman has died of an apparent overdose on tainted drugs, police announced on August 8th.
The AP reported that Gregory Coleman died in Rochester, N.Y., from a bad batch of drugs. Police are not sure whether the drugs were heroin, cocaine or a combination.
Coleman once told a one-judge grand jury in Greenwich, Conn., that Skakel told him: "I'm going to get away with murder. I'm a Kennedy."
Let's see if we have this right.
Marilyn Monroe died under very suspicious circumstances after having affairs with both Jack and Bobby Kennedy.
Ted "The Hero of Chappaquiddick" Kennedy got a slap on the wrist after he took a long drive off a short pier resulting in the drowning death of Mary Jo Kopechne in 1969.
In 1991, Senator Edward Kennedy's nephew William Kennedy Smith was acquited of rape. (Would he have been acquited if he hadn't been a Kennedy?).
And then we have this from CNN in May of 1997 - "A former baby sitter who reportedly had a five-year affair with Michael Kennedy -- a son of the late Sen. Robert Kennedy -- beginning when she was 14 will not file charges or cooperate in an investigation."
BREAKING NEWS!:
The mother of the teenaged baby sitter seduced by Michael Kennedy has died "after a tragic battle with alcoholism and an eating disorder, making her the latest innocent victim of the Kennedy curse," says the New York Post.
June Marie Fitzpatrick Verrochi, 51, never recovered from the shock of her 14-year-old daughter's affair with Kennedy died on August 11.
"She was devastated and destroyed," said Mary Stuart, a friend of the family.
No wonder Skakel could state with confidence: "I AM GOING TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER. I AM A KENNEDY."
