1997: Led the CFL in passing and the Toronto Argonauts to a Grey Cup championship for the second straight season while also repeating as the championship game's MVP...earned CFL Most Outstanding Player honors for the sixth time in eight seasons...completed 430 of 673 passes (63.9%) for 5,505 yards and a club record 47 touchdowns...the 47 TDs were just one shy of his CFL single-season mark of 48 set in 1994 with Calgary...in the Grey Cup game vs. Saskatchewan, was 30-38 for 352 yards with three touchdowns and also rushed five times for 35 yards and a score in leading the Argos to a 47-23 victory.
1996: Signed with Toronto as a free agent on 3/15...in his first season with the Argos, threw 434 completions on 677 attempts for 5,720 yards, all club records...also rushed for 756 yards on 101 carries, the best single-season ever by an Argos QB...completed 18 passes or more in every regular season game and topped 300 passing yards 11 times...ended the season as the league's Most Outstanding Player after helping Toronto win the Grey Cup...earned MVP honors in the championship game.
1995: In his fourth year with Calgary, completed a career-best 67.2% of his passes while throwing just five interceptions in 332 attempts...missed seven games due to an elbow injury marking his first injury-related absence in five seasons...led the Stampeders to the Grey Cup game where they fell to Baltimore.
1994: Named the league's Most Outstanding Player for the fourth consecutive season...established a CFL single-season record with 48 TD passes for Calgary, surpassing his own mark by four...also set the league record for passing efficiency with a rating of 118.2 while again leading the CFL in passing...helped the Stamps set a league record with 698 points...scored eight TDs (6 passing, 2 rushing) vs. Wpg. (8/23).
1993: Led the CFL in passing and topped the 6,000 yard mark for the second time in his career...threw for over 400 yards seven times, including a club-record 556 yards at Ott. (8/6)...helped the Stamps to their best regular season record ever (15-3)...accounted for 11 of the team's 15 rushing TDs...was named the league's Most Outstanding Player a record third straight year.
1992: Signed as a free agent with Calgary on 3/23...again earned Most Outstanding Player honors and also led the Stampeders to the Grey Cup title...was named the MVP of the game after Calgary defeated Wpg. for Flutie's first Grey Cup win...attempted a team record 63 passes at Sask. (8/7)...topped 15,000 passing yards in his 51st CFL game, making him the fastest person ever to reach that mark.
1991: Selected the league's Most Outstanding Player for the first time after establishing a total of 23 CFL and B.C. Lions records...was responsible for a total of 52 touchdowns - 14 on the ground and 38 in the air...his 6,619 passing yards and 466 completions still stand as single-season CFL records.
1990: Signed with the CFL's B.C. Lions as a free agent in June and went on to play in 16 games...finished the season ranked sixth in the CFL in passing and eighth in rushing.
1989: Saw action in five games for New England and made three starts...started at Buf. (10/1), vs. Hou. (10/8) and at Atl. (10/15); Patriots were 1-2 in those games...only other two appearances were at Raiders (11/26) and vs. Ind. (12/3).
1988: Played in 11 games with the Patriots and earned nine starts; Pats were 6-3 in those starts...earned AFC Player of the Week honors for performance vs. Ind. (10/2); entered at the start of the 4th quarter of a 7-7 game and went 12 for 16 passing for 132 yards and capped a nine-play, 80 yard drive with 13-yard scoring run with :23 left to claim the 21-17 victory...finished the season with 92 completions on 179 attempts for 1,150 yards, eight TDs and 10 INTs...also ranked as the team's third leading rusher with 179 yards on 38 carries...named team's Unsung Hero.
1987: Began season with Chicago but was traded to New England on 10/13 in exchange for an 8th round pick in the 1988 NFL Draft...only action with Pats came in strike replacement game at Hou (10/18) when he started and went 15 for 25 for 199 yards , including a 27-yard TD pass in the 21-7 win.
1986: Signed by the Bears on 10/21 and was activated on 11/4...played in relief roles at TB (11/9), vs. TB (12/7) and at Det. (12/15)...first NFL completion was a 52-yard pass to Willie Gault vs. TB (12/7); next play was a 27-yard TD pass to Walter Payton...made first NFL start in place of injured Mike Tomczak in season finale at Dal. (12/21) and completed 8 of 14 passes for 152 yards, two TDs and an INT...also started playoff game vs. Wash. (1/3/86) and was 11 for 31 for 134 yards with a TD and two INTs in a 27-13 loss...originally selected by the LA Rams in the 11th round of the 1985 NFL Draft (285th overall) and was on the team's developmental squad from June 10th through the remainder of the '85 season...Rams traded his rights to Chi. on 10/14/86 along with a fourth-round pick in exchange for the Bears third and sixth picks in '87.
1985: Was a territorial draft pick of the USFL's New Jersey Generals and signed with the team on 2/4...played in 15 games with the Generals and completed 134 of 281 passes (47.7%) for 2,109 yards, 13 TDs and 14 INTs...also rushed 65 times for 465 yards (7.2 avg.) and six TDs.
COLLEGE: Capped an outstanding collegiate career at Boston College by winning the 1984 Heisman Trophy...left school as the NCAA's all-time passing yardage leader with 10,579 yards (since surpassed)...was a consensus All-America as a senior and earned Player of the Year honors from UPI, Kodak, Sporting News as well as the Maxwell Club...as a senior, completed 233 of 386 passes for 3,454, 27 TDs and 11 INTs...Most memorable moment of BC career came at Miami (11/23/84) when he went 34 of 46 for 472 yards and three TDs, including a 48-yard pass to Gerard Phelan as time expired to give BC the 47-45 upset.
PERSONAL: Full name -- Douglas Richard Flutie...was all-league in football, basketball, and baseball at Natick High...younger brother Darren, who played for San Diego in 1988, has excelled in the CFL as a receiver and currently plays with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats...the two are in a band called "The Flutie Brothers," with Darren playing guitar and Doug on drums...earned degrees in computer science and speech communications at BC...grew up as a fan of the Baltimore Colts and Miami Dolphins...wore #22 for Baltimore Orioles pitcher Jim Palmer and Dolphins RB Mercury Morris...Doug and his wife, Laurie, have two children -- 11-year-old daughter, Alexa, and 7-year-old son, Doug...in April of '98, the couple announced the creation of the Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism, which focuses on raising awareness and support for those affected by the disorder with which their son has been diagnosed...launched "Flutie Flakes" cereal in 1998 to raise funds for the foundation; the cereal's enormous success (over 1.5 million boxes sold) led to spin-off of "Flutie Flakes" candy bar.
