Pallet Town: This is where you start. First, go to your computer and withdraw a Potion. Then leave your house and go north. as soon as you go into the tall grass, Prof. Oak will stop you and take you to his lab, where you and your rival will get to pick your first Pokemon. there will be a Charmander, a Squirtle, and a Bulbasaur. I would recomend picking Bulbasaur if you are a beginner. your rival will always pick the pokemon that yours is weak to. (Example: if you pick bulbasaur, he will pick charmander) On the way out, you will battle him and if you win you'll get some money. Then go up to Viridian City in the north.
Viridian City: Here you can heal your pokemon because on Route 1, you probably found some pokemon. It didn't matter because you couldn't catch them. After you heal your pokemon, go into the PokeMart. You will be asked to deliver Oak's Parcel to Prof. Oak. Go back down to Pallet Town and give it to him. He'll be in his lab. In return he'll give you and your rival a Pokedex. Leave the lab and go to your rival's house. His sister will be in there and she'll give you a town map. Go back up to Viridian city and buy some pokeballs (about 5) and then you can go back to route 1 and catch a Pidgey and/or a Rattata. After you trained your Pokemon a bit, go through Viridian city and up into the Viridian forest. Here you can get new pokemon, such as weedle, caterpie, Metapod, Kakuna, and Pikachu. (Pikachu is very hard to find.) Also, in the Viridian Forest, there are some Bug Catchers that you must battle. Once you leave, train your pokemon some more in the big grassy area. If you have a Bulbusaur, get him up to at least lv. 13 and if you have a Squirtle, same thing. If you have Charmander, you'll have to raise him to a pretty high level, cause he sucks against rock-type pokemon, the kind that Brock (Pewter City's Gym Leader) has. After you train them, Go up into Pewter City. There you'll have to face Brock. Find the Gym and go inside. You are supposed to fight another trainer before facing brock, but you can sneak by him by just walking behind him. Go up to Brock and challenge him. He will have a Lv. 12 Geodude and a Lv. 14 Onix. If you have Bulbusaur, use Vine Whip and you can kill both pokemon in 2 hits. If you have Squirtle, use your most powerfull water attack, like Bubble. Defeat him and he'll give you a Boulder Badge and TM34. TM34 is Bide. its not that good, so i usually sell it or take out growl for it (unless i have a squirtle). Then you can get through Pewter City and onto Route 3. On Route 3 there is about 8 trainers all bunched up, but you can skip some of them if you want. Also, you can pick up a Jigglypuff and a Spearow along the way. When you're done, go to the Pokemon Center and heal your pokemon. the pokecenter is right before Mt. Moon, you can't miss it. There'll be some guy in the that'll sell you a Magikarp for $500. Don't it tricked into buying it, because Magikarp SUCKS and you can find it easily by fishing. Then go to Mt. Moon. There'll be a bunch of trainers there and 4 new Pokemon you can catch: Zubat, Geodude, Paras, and Clefairy. Zubats will be attacking you the entire way through Mt. Moon, so don't be suprised if you run into about 20 of them. Geodudes are pretty easy to find, too, but Paras and Clefairy are really hard to find. There will be a lot of stuff at Mt. Moon, like 2 Potions, TM01 (Mega Punch), TM12 (Water Gun), Moon Stone, Rare Candy, and Escape Rope. At the end of Mt. Moon, there will be a Super Nerd trainer that you have to beat so that you can have one of two fossils. You can get either the Dome Fossil or the Helix Fossil. Later on, you can get a Kabuto from the Dome Fossil and an Omanyte from the Helix fossil. Once you leave Mt. Moon, you'll be on Route 4. There's nothing much there, except for TM04, which is Whirlwind. It really sucks, so don't teach it to anyone. Sell it instead. If you have the Red version, you can get an Ekans and if you have the Blue version, you can get a Sandshrew looking in the grassy areas. Then you'll finally get to Cerulean City. There, you'll have to beat Misty for the Cascade Badge. She has a Lv. 18 Staryu and a Lv. 21 Starmie. There's a bunch of stuff in Cerulean City. There's a guy there that will trade his Jynx for a Poliwhirl. You can get Poliwhirl later by fishing. There's also a bike shop in Cerulean City where you can buy a bicycle for $1000000, but that's too expensive to buy. To get a bike, you have to get a Bike Voucher from another city to trade for a bike. A bike will let you travel very quickly. After you beat Misty, you'll notice that there is no way out of Cerulean City. To leave, you have to get the gaurd to move out of the way of the house you you can get in and go out the back. To get him to move, you have to go visit Bill at Sea Cottage. So go north to Route 24. There you will face your rival. After that, you must beat five trainers and a guy from Team Rocket on Nugget Bridge. Then turn onto Route 25 and get by the trainers to get to Bill's house. He'll be in trouble, so help him and he'll give you a S.S. Ticket so you can get on the S.S. Anne in Vermilion City. Then when you go back to Cerulean City, the gaurd will not be in front of the door anymore. go in the house and out the back. You'll face a guy from Team Rocket and he'll give you a TM for teaching Dig to a Pokemon. Leave Cerulean City and go south. You'll find this little house soon. Go in it so you can get through the underground path to Vermilion City. In Vermilion City, first, go to the some kind of fan club and talk to this guy and listen to his story about Rapidash, his favorite Pokemon. If you do, you'll get a Bike Voucher so you can trade it for a bike. Make sure you go into every house and talk to everyone because there's someone who will trade his very rare Farfetch'd for a very common Spearow. After you've done everything, go on the S.S. Anne. There's a lot of trainers on the ship, including your rival, who you'll have to face again. After you defeat your rival, go to the captain of the ship. Go up behind him and push A. You'll automatically rub his back. When you do, he'll give you HM01, Cut. You'll need cut so you can cut through small bushes (or are they trees?). Leave the S.S. Anne and it will leave. When it leaves, you must beat Lt. Surge for the Thunder Badge. Cut the tree to get to his Gym. Before you can face Lt. Surge, you must beat 3 other trainers AND open the locks to the doors that are blocking him. To open them, look in all the trash cans until you find a lock. The second one is always right next to the first one, but if you don't find the second one right away, you'll have to find them all over again. When you've opened them, you can challenge him. he uses electric type pokemon, so if you use a ground type pokemon, he'll be a cinch. Just get a Diglett from Diglett's Cave and it'll beat all of them easily (Make sure the Diglett has a Dig attack). Now that you beat Lt. Surge, you're ready to leave Vermilion. Before you leave, however, you can get an Old Rod from this fishing guy in a house. You can use the Old Rod to fish for Lv. 5 Magikarps and thats it. After you get it, first, make sure you have at least 10 different kinds of Pokemon. If you do, thats great. If you don't, get at least 10 different kinds. Then go back to Diglett's Cave. This time, go through the entire cave and you'll be back on Route 2, except now, you'll be on the other side where you couldn't go before. In the first small house, you can trade an Abra for a Mr. Mime, but you really have to go to that big house thats taking up the whole path. Go in there and talk to Prof. Oak's Aide. If you caught at least 10 differnt kinds of Pokemon like I told you to do before, he'll give you HM05. Use it to teach Flash to a Pokemon. Then leave the house and you'll find 2 Pokeballs. One of the is a Moon Stone and the other is HP Up. Then, go back to Diglett's Cave and go through it again.
Now that you are back in Vermilion City, go to the Underground Path back to Cerulean City. Now, go right of Cerulean and cut through the bush. You'll be on Route 9. Go through Route 9 and you'll find a Pokemon Center. Next to it is a cave. That's Rock Tunnel. Go inside of it. You'll notice it's so dark in there you can't see a thing. To light it up, use Flash, which you got before, and the whole cave will light up. Now you have to get through Rock Tunnel. It mainly follows one main path, so you probably won't get lost. There's mostly Pokemaniacs in there showing off with some Slowpokes and Cubones. There's also some Pokemon in there: Same old Zubats and Geodudes, but you can also find a Machop or an Onix in there if you're lucky. When you're out, don't think that you're through with Trainers. You'll find 4 trainers on the next Route (10). However, if your Pokemon are seriously injured, stay on the right side of the route to avoid them so you can get to Lavender Town and heal your Pokemon before taking on the trainers. Now you're finally at Lavender Town. There are special things here at Lavender Town that were not at other cities. First, in the PokeMart, you can now purchase Great Balls and Revive potions. A Great Ball will work better for catching Pokemon than a regular Pokeball. A Revive will bring one of your fainted Pokemon back to life with half of its HP. Second, there's a Nickname Rater that will change the nicknames of your Pokemon. For instance, if your Pidgey, Bob, turns into Pidgeotto, the Nickname Rater will gladly change the nicknames of any of your Pokemon. Third, the Pokemon Tower. There's no real point in going inside until you get the Silph Scope, which you'll get later on. Inside you're rival is waiting for you so he can challenge you to another battle. Once you get to the 3rd floor you'll start finding Channelers that attack you with Gastlys or possibly a Haunter. You'll also start running into "Ghosts" that you'll soon find out that you can't fight because you Pokemon are too scared to move. The only way to actually see these ghosts is to have the Silph Scope. And when you try to go to the top floor, there is a ghost, that blocks the stairs, so really, you don't have to come to the Pokemon Tower until you get what you need. So go left of Lavender Town onto the next route. You'll find a small house at the end. Since you can't go any further, go into that house because it's another underground path, this time to Celedon City. When you're in Celedon, there's a lot of stuff to do. First, you have to defeat Erika at the gym. The gym is in the south of the city. You have to Cut down a bush to get there. And once your inside, you have to cut some more to reach Erika. Erika uses grass type Pokemon, which is very good if your carrying around a Charmeleon/Charizard around. You only need a Lv. 32 Charmeleon and that'll be enough, but it'll probably be at a higher level than that by the time your there. Erika has a Lv. 29 Victreebel, Lv. 24 Tangela, and a Lv. 29 Vileplume. When you defeat her, she'll give you the Rainbow Badge and TM21, Mega Drain. If you have an Ivysaur or a Venusaur, you should use it on them. The Raindow badge lets you use Strength in and out of battle and all Pokemon up to Lv. 50 obey. After you defeat Erika, you can either go to the Game Corner, the Pokemon Mansion, or to the huge department store. If you want to go to the Game Corner, first you have to find the Bar. When you do, talk to the man at the table and he'll give you a Coin Case. Then go the Game Corner for some coins. There are hidden coins lying around and three of the people at the slot machines give you some coins. Then you can play on the slot machines and try to win some more. If you run out, talk to the man at the counter and he'll give you 50 coins for $1000. When you have enough coins, you can go next door to the Coin Exchange and exchange your coins for some rare Pokemon.
Red Version | Blue Version
Abra - 180 coins | Abra - 120 coins
Clefairy - 500 coins | Clefairy - 750 coins
Nidorina - 1,200 coins | Nidorino - 1,200 coins
Dratini - 2,800 coins | Pinsir - 2,500 coins
Scyther - 5,500 coins | Dratini - 4,600 coins
Porygon - 9,999 coins | Porygon - 6,500 coins
Also at the Game Corner, you have to get down to the basement and defeat Giovanni to get the Silph Scope. Talk to the guy in front of the poster. He'll challenge you and you have to defeat him. After he talks and leaves, go up to the poster and hit A. You'll hit a secret switch. Then, go to the right and you'll find stairs leading down into the basement. Here, first of all, you gotta find the Lift Key. Go around the building until you find a Rocket that says "The elevator doesn't work? Who has the LIFT KEY?" Defeat him and then talk to him again. He'll say "Oh, no! I dropped the LIFT KEY!" and an item ball will appear. Get it. It's the Lift Key, so now you can work the elevator. Go to the B4F and then defeat the gaurds at the door. The door will open, and then you can go face Giovanni. He has a Lv. 25 Onix, a Lv. 24 Rhyhorn, and a Lv. 29 Kangaskhan. Defeat him and get the Silph Scope. Next, you can go to the Pokemon Mansion. There's nothing to do if you go in the front door except talk to people, so go around to the back door. Keep going up the stairs until you find a room at the top. There's a Poke Ball in there with an Eevee inside, so make sure you get it. Just make sure to come back here to the Mansion if you get all 150 Pokemon. If you go through the front door and go to the computer room and talk to the guy who's not on a computer, he'll give you a diploma certifying that you caught all 150 Pokemon. Next, you'll want to go to the Department Store. Here, you'll find tons of stuff that you couldn't get anywhere else! There is 5 floors, plus the rooftop, with tons of new stuff on each floor except for the first and third. On the second floor you can get:

On the Rooftop Vending Machine, you can get:

When you're on the rooftop, you'll find a girl that says she's thirsty. Give her a Fresh Water, Soda Pop, or Lemonade, and she'll give you a TM for each one. Give her fresh water, she'll give you TM13 (Ice Beam). Give her a Soda Pop, she'll give you TM48 (Rock Slide). And give her a Lemonade, she'll give you TM49 (Tri Attack). Don't forget to get some water for the thirsty gaurds around Saffron City. Now, with the Silph Scope in hand, its time to go to the Pokemon Tower. You'll now be able to see the ghosts, which are mostly Gastlys. But if you're lucky, you'll find a Haunter or a Cubone. All of these Pokemon can't be found anywhere else, so be sure to look all over. On the fifth floor there is a square that heals your Pokemon. It is a good idea to stop there before going off to the final two floors. At the stairs of the 6th floor, you'll be stopped by a Lv. 30 Marowak. It's the mother of a Cubone that Team Rocket killed, and you can't catch it. Defeat it and go to the top floor where you're going to have to defeat three Team Rocket members before you can get to Mr. Fuji. He'll take you to his house where you'll get the Poke Flute. Now with the Poke Flute, you can wake up some sleeping Snorlaxes that are in the way. You have two choices. Go the long way by going south of Lavender Town to Silence Bridge and then finally to Fuchsia City, OR you have take the shorter way down Cycling Road. I would recommend going down Cycling Road, it's much quicker. But if you want to go the long way, be sure to go to that little house near Cycling Road to get HM02 before going down south of Lavender Town. HM02 is Fly. You can teach it to a Flying type Pokemon and it will take you back to any city that you've already been in.
