| This is the News and Observers report....... The plane appeared to have engine trouble before it crashed while trying to return to the airstrip. Two dead in small plane crash APEX, May 15 – Two people are dead after a small, private airplane crashed in Apex Sunday. The home-built, RV-4 aircraft crashed near a home just after taking off from the private Cox airport off U.S. 64. The plane is of a kind used for aerobatic competition. Witnesses say they heard the plane’s engine cut out, and then saw the pilot try to return to the airport. Then the plane crashed out front of a nearby home. The pilot has been identified as Paul Spampinato, a former military and commercial pilot with many years of experience. The boy who died is thought to be his son. They were rushed to Wake Med Medical Center, where they were pronounced dead from head injuries.
