Birthdate/Place: 1991 / Charlottesville, Virginia.

- In 1967, when he was two years old, Dave Matthews' parents moved from South Africa to the United States. Matthews' dad was a physicist/researcher for IBM and had gotten a job offer in New York City.

- At age nine, Matthews and the rest of the family began taking piano lessons. Eventually, he grew tired of the piano, and switch to the guitar. A year later, in 1974 his father died and his mother was so shaken she adopted the Quaker faith, in which Matthews was raised.

- Dave returned to Johannesburg, South Africa to finish high school, and then he worked as a bartender before moving back to the United States and forming the Dave Matthews Band in 1991.

- His decision to come back to the states was hastened by a "letter of inscription" by the South African army, and Matthews says, "This, of course, was when apartheid still ruled, and I wasn't going to serve that army."

- Dave first met Carter and Leroi and asked Stefan, who was still in high school, to play bass. Boyd was the last piece of the puzzle. Boyd got hired after playing on a demo of Trippin' Billies.

- On May 11, 1991, the Dave Matthews Band got their first gig working for a party of about forty people on the roof of an apartment building in Charlottesville. The band would later work at University of Virginia partys as well as work at area bars.

- As the Dave Matthews Band's fan base grew, the band encouraged concert goers to tape their shows and trade bootlegs.

- In 1993, they independently released Remember Two Things which sold over 160,000 copies, making it the highest selling independent album album ever.

- Their major label debut, Under The Table and Dreaming, in 1994 had huge success with What Would You Say, Ants Marching, Satelite and The Best of What's Around.

- The following year, 1995, the band headlined the 1995 LIFEbeat Concert in New York, to help raise money for AIDS, and also appeared as regular guests on the H.O.R.D.E. tour.

- Crash was released in 1996 and featured Tripping Billies, So Much To Say, Typical Situation and the mega-hit Crash Into Me. During recording in the New York studios, the producer, Steve Lillywhite, got the best out of the band by letting them play Ping Pong to take the edge off of being in the studio.

- In September of 1996, bassist Stefan Lessard's 3-week-old daughter, Aslan died of unknown causes. The band immediately canceled the next 11 shows.

- A year later, 1997, the Dave Matthews Band played Farm Aid with artists as Willie Nelson, Beck, John Foggerty and John Mellencamp.
