Alien Resurrection, a strange film that couldn't decide if it was clever, moralistic or just a bit dull, is finally about to enjoy its PC and PlayStation release.
Developed by British company Argonaut, owner of the playful hands behind the phenomenally popular Croc games, Alien Resurrection has grabbed all it can from the film. Argonaut worked with the set designers, and as a result the game includes 3D models of many of the sets and weapons from the movie, including some elements which only made it as far as the editing room floor. Playing as Ripley (or rather her cloned form) this is a Tomb Raider-ish action / adventure game, but far more reliant on alien blasting.
No matter which way she is running away from the chitin-coated creeps, Ripley can always fire back at them, as it's handled by a different direction control that's similar in style to Activision's Apocalypse. Argonaut is determined to throw as many aliens in your path as possible, relying heavily on set pieces and spooky music to build up the tension. Find a room full of eggs and a face-hugger might leap out and attach itself to your face. From then on you've got as long as it takes a bar to drop to zero to find a way of ridding the parasite from your insides. The race is on.
The film received an 18 certificate in the UK, and there seems to be some indication that Fox might be aiming for much the same for the PC and PlayStation releases. We'll see how gory the game gets when the PC version is released shortly. But you'll have to wait a year for it on the PlayStation. |
