Here is a brief outline of how Megadeth formed and where they are now.
1982
> Metallica are formed with Dave Mustaine on guitars. James Hetfield proides vocals, Lars Ullrich on drums and Ron McGovney on bass
>Brad Parker ( Damian Phillips ) is hired as second guitarist but quits after one gig
>Hetfield takes up rhythm guitar
>Release "No Life 'til Leather" demo
>Cliff Burton Hired as new bassist over Ron McGovney
1983
>Dave is fired and Kirk Hammett leaves Exodus to replace him
>Dave forms Megadeth with bassist David Ellefson, Slayer guitarist Kerry King and drummer Lee Rash. ( Dave also plays guitar )
>King returns to Slayer after helping 'deth on tour and i later replaced by Chris Poland. Gar Samuelson replaces Lee Rash on drums.
>Dave becomes singer on New Years' Eve.
1984
>Megadeth are signed to Combat records
1985
>Release debut "Killing is my Business........ and Business is Good"
1986
>Cliff Burton dies in tour bus accident
>Megadeth release "Peace sells...but who's buying?"
>Sign to Capitol records and they recieve rights to "Peace sells..." from combat
>Chris Poland and Gar Samuelson fired
1987
>Chuch Behler becomes drummer and Jay Reynolds of Malice helps out until Jeff Young is recruited as the new guitarist.
>Year is spent touring
1988
>Release "So Far So Good......So What!"
>Appear on documentary show "The Decline of Westen Civilaization 2: the meatl years"
>Plays show with KISS and Iron Maiden
>Open for the Monsters of Rock tour
1989
>Jeff Young and Chuck Behler fired
>Dave is arrested for drunk driving
>Nick Menza joins as drummer
1990
>Cover "No more Mr. Nice guy" from Alice Cooper for a soundtrack. Only song released as a three piece
>Marty Friedman of Cacophony joins
>"Rust in Peace" (best album ever) is released
1991
>Dave gets married
>Release "Rusted Pieces" video
>"Go to Hell" featured on Bill and Ted soundtrack
1992
>"Breakpoint" featured on Super Mario Soundtrack
>Release "Countdown to extinction"
>Video "Exposure of a Dream" is released
>Dave's son is born
1993
>"99 ways to die" on Beavis and Butthead Experience soundtrack
>Year spent touring
1994
>Release "Youthanasia"
1995
>"Diadems" featured on Tales from the Crypt soundtrack
>"Hidden Treasures" compilation released in Europe
>"Evolver: The Making of Youthnasia" released on VHS
>"Hidden Treasures" released in USA and Japan
1996
>David Ellefson's son is born
1997
>Release "Cryptic Writings"
1998
>Dave's daughter is born
>Megadeth join Ozzfest bill
>Nick Menza leaves, Jimmy DeGrasso is his replacement
>David Ellefson's daughter is born
1999
>Start recording new album
>"Risk" is released in late summer, certified gold
2000
>Al Pitrelli joins replacing Marty Friedman
>Begin work on their 10th album
>Leaves Capitol and signs with Sanctuary records
>Release "Capitol Punishment: The Megadeth Years" as a best of album
>Return to studio to finish new album which is set for release on the 14th of May 2001
As you can probably see there have been a lot of lineup changes. This is because Dave is reportedly difficult to work with. Each album has a slightly different sound so its hard to pin-point what they sound like. They are primarily thrash. If u want to get into them i strongly urge u to buy Rust in Peace.
