Building Star Wars robots and firing them out of catapults is the stuff games are made of. It's also the stuff science is made of, and DroidWorks deftly combines the two into a fun, educational title for kids ages 10 and up.
DroidWorks sets kids on an adventure that involves tinkering with scientific principles such as energy, force, and motion; machines; light; and magnetism. Disguised as one of the Jawa - the robot-recyclers from Star Wars - your child builds droids, following specific guidelines, to complete 13 missions. In Fire When Ready, for example, the droid must have tracks or wheels (to negotiate steep inclines) and weigh less than 100 kilograms.
Manipulating the controls of a high-tech catapult, your child next experiments with mass and trajectory by firing crates toward a target. When he feels he has the correct angle, he replaces the crate with the droid and sends him on his way. If the droid does not make it over the great divide, your child can either start over or consult an interactive guide to brush up on his science.
With roots deep in mythology, Star Wars has always been more than just a sci-fi shooter. In DroidWorks, said our 63 testers, learning most definitely is the force that's with your child.
