Neptune- Neptune is one of the two planets that cannot be seen without a telescope. Neptune is about 30 times as far from the sun as earth. Pluto is the only planet farther from the sun than Neptune. But every 248 years Pluto moves inside Neptune's orbit for about a 20 year period. Pluto entered Neptune's orbit on January 23, 1979, and will remain there till March 15, 1999. Neptune's diameter is about 30,200 miles or almost 4 times the earth's.The planet is about 17 times more massive than the earth.Neptune's blue color is the result of absorption of red light by methane in the atmosphere. Like a typical gas planet, Neptune has rapid winds confined to bands of latitude and large storms or vortices. Neptune's winds are the fastest in the solar system, reaching 2000 km/hour. Like Jupiter and Saturn, Neptune has an internal heat source -- it radiates more than twice as much energy as it receives from the Sun.Neptune has 8 known satellites and its rings are made of an unknown material. Its believe to have some sort of a rocky or icy surface. The Astronomers think that the clouds of Neptune are made up of frozen ammonia, ice crystals and frozen methane. The atmosphere contains mostly hydrogen and methane gas with sum helium and possibly ethane. The temperature is about -360 F. and one year is about 165 earth years.
