APOLLO 13
Call Name: Odyssey and Aquarius
Crew: James A. Lovell, John L. Swigert,Jr. Fred W. Haise, Jr.
Date: April 11-17, 1970
The third lunar landing attempt turned out to be perilous and dramatic. On the third day of the mission, an explosion caused by a short circuit that ignited electrical insulation in an oxygen tank resulted in the loss of all oxygen stored in the service module. The command module operating life
of only 10 hours had to be reserved for the approach of Earth's atmosphere. Two factors were critical, plotting a true and quick course for home and conserving consumable. A network of simulators, computers, and experts was set-up to solve the problem. By using the lunar module's descent engine for propulsion, the crew looped the crippled spacecraft around the moon and headed home. The spacecraft splashed down in the Pacific ocean just three and a half miles away from the prime recovery zone.
