A half-billion TV viewers all over the world shared the dramatic moment when astronaut Neil Armstrong at 10:56 P.M. EDT on Sunday, July 20, 1969, set foot on the moon in the Sea of Tranquility and spoke the words "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." During an *EVA of 2 hours, 31 minutes astronauts Armstrong and Aldren unveiled a plaque which read "Here men from the planet earth first set foot upon the moon, July 1969 A.D., We came in peace for all mankind." They also planted an American Flag which was specially structured so it would remain unfurled in the lunar vacuum.
