Can use either on-line Web Site Creation Tools OR advanced HTML editing of pages directly. Can also upload files directly from your PC. Geocities, the largest and most sophisticated provider of free home pages on the Net. You get 6 megs of server space and a free email account. Only non-commercial pages are allowed, either a top of site ad banner or an automatic annoying pop-up window ad are required. Also, the assigned username is somewhat difficult for others to find .. an arcane combination of place names and numbers .. www.geocities.com/xxx/yyy/nnnn .. Note: Subdirectories not permitted - so all your pages and graphics must be kept in the root directory. FTP enabled.
www.homestead.com Free 5 MB webspace per homepage. No limit on number of homepages. Java based editor with advanced page design features. A little slow (due to Java) and have to build and maintain your sites online - no upload feature. Also a little long in access name: www.homestead.com/username ..

Oops, no upload feature (that I can see, for free I mean), so be prepared to spend some time online. Great graphics and interface. Automatically creates/maintains navigation links for you. Nice short access name, too .. maxpages.com/username .. Web size limit is based on number of pages rather than total space used. Each page text area is limited to a fixed size (e.g. 8K in this text area). This page is hosted on MaxPages.
Tripod provides 5 Megs of free space and requires or places an annoying pop-up ad on your page. Of course, you can pay a small fee for more space and no ads. Only single level of subdirectories permitted above your root directory. Better naming convention .. members.tripod.com/username .. FTP enabled.
XOOM 11 MB with no advertising! For real! Nice short name - but just what does Xoom mean? See members.xoom.com/UserName .. FTP transfers or use the website builder screens. Permits subdirectories for your \images, etc folders. Highly recommended.
Downside? Well, if your free page stops working, you are just OOL. They don't have to guarantee service or access (does anyone?). Make your own backup files onto your PC, just in case, so you can recreate your site onto another location if needs be. In the meantime, you can post your views and news - for free. If only I could find a site where they paid you to post .. |
