Software and Development programs for your Web Page
This page documents software links to programs that are at least free for download.
Maxpages.com can create your webpage for you online without you having to know anything about <,>'s and matching tags. If you select this option, you won't need to (and can't) use the programs below to edit your pages. You do have to be online, though, to edit your pages and you lose some control of your source code - it is automatically maintained for you by maxpages .. On the other hand, you can create great pages very quickly and easily. And you can copy the created pages back to your PC for backup if you wish (Just select File, Save as .. for each page from your browser.
Microsoft Notepad /Wordpad. Many new to the internet do not realize that you really don't NEED those fancy HTML editor/development packages. I ran my first web site for over a year using hand coded HTML with just MS Notepad. You can find this hand little editor in you c:\windows directory in both Win3.1+ and Win95. Win95 also includes the Wordpad application. Of course, you will have to learn how to code HTML tags properly, and there is no spell checking or preview, but you should already know how to spell, and you can easily just use your internet web browser to preview the file before you send it forth onto the internet. That said, the packages below do provide a friendlier WYSIWYG environment.
Both the new Netscape Communicator and Internet Explorer browser packages include HTML page editors (except in the MAC and WIN3.1 versions - sorry) that will do a pretty good job for you. I find them a little frustrating in that they sometimes automatically reformat your layout and then won't let you change it back. But then again, you more than get your money's worth - it was given away free with the browser. See www.browsers.com for current download links.
FrontPage 45-day trial CD Offer (May 1998). Includes a full copy of the program, Image Composer 1.5, and Microsoft Personal Web Server for Windows95. There is a charge for shipping, and the fee varies depending on where you are. For all the details, go to http://www.microsoft.com/frontpage/Trial/trial.htm I have used Frontpage 98 for the past several months. The really nice thing is that, while it simplifies and automates many basic features, it doesn't get in your way when you want to use the advanced features. I originally purchased it just for the Image Composer graphics program. Recommended for heavy duty development.
