Pro Career

Ray made his second trip to the Pro Bowl following last season after leading the Ravens again with 154 tackles...Was named one of two middle linebackers on the AFC Pro Bowl squad (along with Junior Seau)...Also tabbed for The Sporting News All-Pro Team...Has 506 career tackles in 44 games (avg. 11.5 per game)...Intense, physical, and experienced beyond his 24 years, Ray won the John Mackey Award in June of ?97, as voted by his peers, for the AFC?s best linebacker...In just his second NFL season, Ray served as the ?veteran? leader of the Ravens? young linebacking corps in 1997, which consisted of Lewis and five rookies...Selected as the ?need? player for the victorious AFC squad in the 1997 Pro Bowl after leading the NFL with 210 tackles, 68 more than his team-leading total in 1996...Stepped into the starting MLB role in his rookie season at age 21, and earned USA Today?s All-Rookie team honors after leading the Ravens with 142 tackles...Ray was selected with the 26th overall pick in the draft, the Ravens? second choice in the first round (OL Jonathan Ogden of UCLA was tabbed with the fourth overall pick)...The Ravens obtained the 26th choice from San Francisco in a 1995 draft day trade...Was the fourth linebacker selected overall in the draft and first of two Hurricanes tabbed (RB Derrick Harris was picked in the sixth round by the Rams).

College Highlights

Three-year starter who came out after his junior season...Consensus All-American and runnerup for the Butkus Award...Finished fifth on Miami's all-time tackles chart with 388 career stops, including 19 for losses and six quarterback sacks...Led the Hurricanes in tackles for 22 consecutive games and led the Big East Conference in tackles for two straight seasons...Finished junior season (1995) with a team-high 160 tackles and earned consensus first-team All-America and All-Big East honors...Member of Playboy All-America team...Tackle total was second in Hurricane history (Ed Weisacosky had 164 in 1965)...Started every game at middle linebacker as a sophomore (1994), earning first-team All-Big East honors, and first-team All-America honors from The Poor Man's Guide to the NFL Draft and Football News...Led team with 152 tackles, including nine for losses and two sacks...Played his way into the starting lineup as a freshman (1993), starting the final five games...Totaled 81 tackles, two for losses, four passes defensed and two QB sacks...Earned Freshman All-America honors by The Gridiron Report.
