What is a doula?
The word doula comes from ancient Greek and is used to refer to " a woman who is experienced in childbirth who provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to the mother before, during and after childbirth"
(Klaus, Kennel and Klaus Mothering the Mother)
Why do I need a doula if my partner will be there?
Fathers are the most important emotional support people the mother can have. When you hire a doula your husband can support you and the doula can provide you and your partner with food and drinks, fetch cold washcloths or help you into the shower. Your doula can also suggest various comfort measures to help you cope with the intensity of contractions.
I really like my doctor!
Liking your doctor is an important aspect of good maternity care. However the reality of healthcare today is that the doctor most likely will not be there for the duration of your labour. Every family deserves continuous labour support.
Wont I have a nurse?
Yes! Maternity nurses are wonderful! However nurses have many tasks to perform such as charting, listening to babys heart rate, and working with other patients. She most likely will not be at your side for your entire labour. A doulas only role is to support the family.
Questions to ask a doula you are considering hiring:
What is your philosophy?
What type of training do you have?
Do you have a back-up doula?
What services do you offer?
How many prenatal visits do you like to have?
Do you offer postpartum support?
What is your experience with breastfeeding?
What is your fee?
May I see some evaluations from doctors or previous clients?
Remember, it is important that you and your mate feel comfortable with the doula you are considering hiring. Do not feel badly if you dont feel like you click. Ask for a referral to another doula!
WHAT IS THE COST?
Because of our extensive experience, our labour support fee is $700.00. This includes:
*free consultation
*2 prenatal visits
*attending the family at home for as long as they are comfortable
*go with them to the hospital and stay for about 2 hours postpartum
