My review of Wish You Were Here, as always, on a scale of 1 to 5 stars
Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Part 1) ****
Welcome To The Machine ****
Have A Cigar *****
Wish You Were Here *****
Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Part 2) *****
The breakthrough success of Dark Side of the Moon made Wish You Were Here a crucial follow-up in strictly commercial terms. Further pressure came from it being Pink Floyd's first recording for a new label, Columbia. Yet the demands on the band only provided Roger Waters with more fodder for his lyrics, which glanced at the band's roots as well as their new responsibilities. The album was in part a tribute to former band member Syd Barrett, who attempted to rejoin the band during recording. The nothing short of epic Shine On You Crazy Diamond was a paean to Barrett's genius and a requiem for his subsequent LSD problems and breakdown. The second track was Welcome to the Machine, a diatribe against a music industry more interested in making money than releasing quality, creative music. Have A Cigar further establishes Waters' contempt for the industry by bringing in Roy Harper to play a "faceless suit" who none to innocently asks: "Which one's Pink?" The best track on the album though is the title track Wish You Were Here. With a slow main riff that almost makes you think youre listening to The Eagles, and lyrics that express mourning for the first casuality of the band's success, Syd Barrett. The themes of disillusionment planted in this album would show up again, first in Animals, and then full blown on The Wall. All in all, this album was great, and second in a string of 4 brilliant works (Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, and The Wall) and nearly, just nearly dethrones Dark Side of the Moon as Floyd's greatest work, but just comes up short.
The Four best songs on the album:
1. Wish You Were Here
2. Have A Cigar
3. Shine On You Crazy Diamond
4. Welcome to the Machine
The bottom line: ***** |
