Trinidad- whereabouts Trinidad- food
Ever heard about tropical islands and coconut trees and friendly island people?
Well, Trinidad is a bit like that. It is near Venezuela and it belongs to a group of islands called the Caribbean. The Caribbean, in general, is in South America.
The main languages spoken in Trinidad and around the Caribbean are: English, Spanish and French. English is usually the first and the Spanish then French.
The capital of Trinidad is Port-of-Spain and it is probably the most developed part of Trinidad, with buildings and offices. It is the Central Business District. There you will find most office jobs and great shopping and restaurants.
The other main towns in Trinidad include: San Fernando, Valsayn and others.
As Trinidad is an island, it is surrounded by blue waters. There are many beaches that are safe but the most popular has to be Mayaro where you can rent a bech house for the weekend. The drive to Mayaro is very exciting with beautiful plants and vines hanging all over the place and it looks like a road surrounded by jungle. There isn't any traffic and it is very peaceful. Then as you near Mayaro, you start to see large groups of palm trees in all shapes and sizes. Beyond them you can see the sea, clear and blue.
This is probably one of the most spectacular sights of Trinidad.
The beaches are all sand and it is a lovely feeling in the clean sea.

Trinidad is a lot smaller than Cyprus but, unbelievably, it has a lot more people! And by a lot more, we mean A LOT more.

Move on to see more about my country.
Trinidadian food is a lot like Indian food, as is the rest of the Caribbean food. Curry, mango and spicy things are just some of the dalicacies on the menu.
There are many different types of curry: curry crab, curry dumpling, curry beef, and many more. These are usually cooked with peppers, potatoes and channa (chick peas). It also depends on the type of curry you intend on making.

Two of Trinidad's best "snacks", or fruits, are mango and sugar cane.
Sugar cane is a type of bamboo stick that you chew on, to produce a sort of sugary liquid. It tastes very good and is very refreshing.
Trinidadians use mango in many things. They make it into something to eat with food, they use it for snacks or they eat it just like that. One of my personal favourites is chow. Chow is a very spicy snack made from bandania, a certain fruit, vinegar and many other wonderful ingredients. Including pepper. You can use mango, or oranges, or cucumbers. Either way it is wonderful.
Trinidad- festivities
Trinidadian festivities are very big things.
Carnival is one of the biggest festivities. Everyone spends lots of money and lots of time preparing their costumes. Even the poorest people splash out on fancy, colourful costumes for the occasion.
The costumes are absolutely breathtaking, with feathers, peacock-like tails, colours everywhere and face paints. They cost a lot of money and many many people save for ages to buy just one part. If you have ever seen a Brazilian Carnival on TV then you will have seen their spectacular costumes. That is what the costumes are like.
Trinidad even made the costumes for the opening festival of the Olympic Games '96.
As well as being very colourful, the costumes are very big and very heavy. Plenty of time is gone into making them.
In Carnival week, there are celebrations all around and people dress up and dance in the streets. Then, at the end of the day, everyone troops into a huge tent where a contest is put on for the best carnival calypsos and songs of that year, with singers from countries from all over the Caribbean coming to participate.

Another big deal in Trinidad has to be Christmas.
Early on Christmas morning, everyone gets up and goes around banging pots and pans and making loud music to wake the sleepy ones up and they troop down the streets in their pyjamas singing and dancing... this is called "parang".
Everyone gets up for a huge breakfast... after the presents of course... of duck(this is very nice) and other wonderful things. Then everyone takes the time to check out their cool new stuff and lounge around as the huge dinner is being prepared. Turkey, curry, dumplings and over 20 dishes are made to enjoy that day... very fattening stuff. The whole family comes over to enjoy this.

Then, in the night, everyone usually has a huge party with banging and playing and everything. It's wonderful!
Then, a week later, on New Years' Eve, there is another huge party, to celebrate the coming year!
