IRC is Internet Relay Chat. It is an Internet way of communicating with people from all over the world. There are channel rooms that you go into and from there you can talk to anyone you like in "private" chat.
This page on my webby is to show you all those words and abbreviations that you can't understand.

ABBREVIATIONS

BRB = Be Right Back... suggesting that the person is going away for a while.

AFK = Away From Keyboard... this person is also away.

GMTA = Great Minds Think Alike

WTF??? = What The (guess)???

BBL = Be Back Later (See Be Right Back)

TTFN = Ta Ta For Now

AWOL = Away Without Leave

DND = Do Not Disturb

SYL = See You Later

PPL = People

PLZ = Please

U = You

R = Are

UR = Your

U'RE = You're

BTW = By The Way

In addition to this, people like to use punctuation to draw faces to express they're feelings. (I just use them when I have nothing to say)
To see these faces, tilt your head to the left(or right). Usually left.

You know you have been on IRC too long when...

01. You type /clear at the % prompt. 02. You keep saying, "I'll only be here another 15 minutes."
03. You are at the top of the TOP 20 IRC user list.
04. You are marked /away more than you type.
05. You wanna say, "Look! I have a bouncy chair, isn't this funny?"
06. You know more people on IRC than you do in real life.
07. You get excited about kicking people from channels.
08. You sit there wondering how many people are on IRC.
09. People come back to the cluster and say, "You're still here?"
10. You write lists of all the IRC commands.
11. You haven't gone to bed in 3 days.
12. You log into all the terminals in the cluster just so you can say you did.
13. You say, "Wow! Maybe I should go eat breakfast soon..."
14. You have a favorite terminal. 15. You get all you friends to sign up for IRC.
16. Your friends can't get you to leave, so they have to use it more...and you talk to them more on IRC than in person.
17. You've completely customized your .ircrc file manually
18. You have your own IRC client!
19. You say, "There's life outside of IRC?"
20. You start using abbreviations like: ppl, cos, bbl, puter, etc.
21. You have ever met someone from IRC (in real life)
22. You want to create ircsh. (a new Unix shell)
23. You have significant others on IRC.
24. You aren't going to any of your classes so that you can IRC.
25. The only thing you know how to do on the computer is IRC.
26. You never capitalize the letter "i".
27. You get more email from people you don't know than people you do.
28. You sign your nick at the bottom of all of your email without even thinking about it.
29. You plan long trips to meet people from IRC.
30. You start saying everyone's name before you talk to then...(ex."Zoi: when are we leaving?")
31. You make more long distance phone calls to IRC people than to your family....(And I am sure that some of you guys are guilty of this one ;)
32. When you accidentally get IRCOp status!
33. You make a list like this.
