Chera woke up the next morning and rubbed her eyes. It was a beautiful morning, reminded her of Bakura. The light just poured in from a nearby window. She was tempted to just lay here and bask in the beauty of it all, but she couldn't. Too much was going on around her.
She got out of bed and went into the main area. Sydnee wasn't present but a large tray of breakfast foods was. She knew that if Sydnee was here she was still asleep because none of the food had been touched.
Chera helped herself to a piece of fruit and was pondering whether or not to take her chances on a pastry filled with an unknown fruit when the door opened and Sydnee walked in. She obviously had spent the night with Jerik. It was all Chera could do not to start laughing the moment she saw her. Chera instantly stuffed the pastry into her mouth to stop the laughter that would definitely erupt the moment she saw Sydnee, still in the same clothes she had worn the night before when she went for a 'walk'.
The next morning Sydnee walked back to her room. She keyed the door open and walked in. Chera was at the table eating a breakfast pastry of some sort. "Where were you last night?" Chera said with a mouthful of pastry. "I was with Jerik."
"Shut up. No way."
"Yup."
"What did you do?"
"We talked about our lives growing up."
"Is that all?"
"YES!"
Chera started to laugh almost choking on her food.
After the exchange at breakfast Sydnee had gone to change and then declined to eat with Chera saying she had already eaten. Chera didn't take this personally, and actually thought it was kind of funny. So after she finished eating she went down stairs where she ran into Master Skywalker.
Luke walked out to the lobby where the hotel clerk was at the counter. He walked to the counter and said. "Do you know of any weird going ons around here?" Handing the Gungan a Fifty-credit coin. "Mesa hearen that there is aresa new residents at the palace." The Gungan said.
"Is that all?"
"Thisen between mesa and yousa. My heard thata the guy upen there isa a Jedi."
"Really. How interesting."
The Gungan nodded his head.
"Well thanks for the information."
Luke walked to Chera and Sydnee's door and pushed the ringer button. Chera answered the door. "What's up Luke. "We are going to the palace." "What for?" Chera replied.
"To get the fool that murdered Callista."
"What!? She's dead?" Her eyes wide.
"Yes."
"No, how, what, who?"
"A Dark Jedi."
"We must find the sorry sack of..."
"Don't say it. You know that aggression leads to the Dark Side."
"Sorry Master Skywalker."
"That?s OK. Lets get the others."
"OK, I'll get Sydnee and Jerik."
"OK."
After hearing about Callista's death Chera was slightly shaken up, Callista had never been her favorite person, but she was a person. And now she was dead. And it's all my fault! She couldn't believe what she was thinking; she was blaming herself for something she couldn't have changed. She never had done this before, and she had had plenty of chances to. When her parents died she was in the house at the time. She had seen her mother die, and had done nothing to stop it. And it hadn't bothered her a bit. But this, maybe because she didn't like Callista, this bothered her allot. Chera was now more determined then ever to get to Theed and the root of all of this. She no longer cared who died because now that somebody had the person became dangerous, but also she thought that maybe she could protect the others. She knew whatever it was wanted her, she would turn herself into it to save them. And then she would be killed. Death didn't seem that bad to her really, it had been a part of her life since the beginning. She would save them, even if it meant killing herself in the process.
In the throne room Jerik was kneeling in front of Mallice. "You have done well my apprentice." Mallice said. "Thank you my master." Jerik said loyally.
"I have a task for you. I want Sydnee Starlighter dead."
Jerik tensed up. "What?"
"I sense a difference in you Jerik. Do you have feelings for this girl?"
"No my master."
"Very good. Go, do as you are commanded."
"Yes my master." Jerik stood up and walked towards the door and exited. Why did Mallice want me to kill her? Jerik thought. I can't do it. I won't do it. He can't make me. Then a feeling came over him. But I must obey my master. Jerik walked into hanger 22B and located a speeder bike. He hopped on it and took off. He had to take some time to think through his options. Finding a small wooded area he parked his speeder and started walking the edge of the wood. "If I kill her then I would lose her and I can't do that." Jerik thought aloud. "But if I disobey my master he will surely kill me and her and the rest of her friends. Jerik walked some more thinking about Sydnee and his dilemma when he came to a grave. The dirt on top was still fresh looking. "I wonder who this is?" Standing there Jerik pondered some more ideas. "Why does this have to be so damn difficult." Suddenly and voice came from behind Jerik. It isn't, if you let the Force be you guide. Jerik turned in the direction of the sound. The silhouette of Callista appeared before him. "What? You?re not dead." Jerik said frightened.
Yes I am. I was killed by your beloved master. She retorted.
"I have one question. Why did you pick me?"
Because you can become part of the Light Side of the Force.
"I cannot betray my master."
Let go of your hate. There is good in you I can feel it.
Jerik started to walk away then turned to face Callista. "Why should I. My master has promised me power beyond my wildest dreams. What does the Light Side I have to offer?" Jerik said mockingly. Callista bowed her head and said. I have tried. And I have failed. Pausing for a moment. Do, or do not. There is no try. Jerik said wondering where in the world that came from, then it hit him like a Star Destroyer smashing into him head on. "That was the last thing my father said to me. Before he left that is." Jerik looked inside of himself. All that was inside of Jerik was a black twisted soul of a bright young man trying to break free. He was disgusted with himself. Jerik ran to his speeder and took off. |
