Later Chera sat in the same room next to the pit Jerik had thrown himself into earlier. She was feeling all the room had to offer. Like the rest of the palace it was brimming with emotions and memories. She was sensing things now she had missed in the excitement of the moment earlier. She felt Jerik's love for both her and Sydnee above his love for his own life. His grim determination to redeem himself in their eyes. And also Sydnee's emotions; her fear in the face of losing somebody else she loved, the sadness she had at losing her lover, her love for him. It was their love for each other that struck Chera the most. It made her realize how much she wanted somebody she felt that way for herself. How completely lonely and isolated she was.
As she sat soaking up emotions she suddenly felt something else, something older and different yet the same. It was as if watching a mirror image of what had happened earlier through somebody else's eyes in a different time. She realized she was watching Obi-Wan Kenobi's view of the day her grandfather had killed his master and then been killed. She sat carefully listening to the memories. Then she heard a voice, she recognized it as the one that had told her to look for Master Skywalker in the pit. A deep, warm, male voice, it held wisdom and humor. She heard it so vividly in her mind that it took her a second to realize her physical ears had picked it up as well. Her eyes fluttered open and she saw a silhouette of a tall man with a long dark beard and broad shoulders. His eyes were very deep set and his face held an ironic smile.
Hello Chera, he said gently I am Qui-Gon Jinn. Chera was astonished. This was the man who had warned her, but hadn't he moved on and become one with the Force years ago when he died?
He laughed Things aren't always what they seem Chera, you have a talent for these things. Chera was stunned. He had tapped into her thoughts. But what did he mean that she 'had a talent for these things'. That was just absurd.
"Sir, 'm afraid I have no idea what you're talking about. I have no talents. I'm a weakling in the Force."
He laughed again Yes Chera, you do have a talent. You have a talent for communication. You have the ability to reach father and talk longer to other people then any other Jedi I have ever heard of. And as for being a weakling, you are just being blocked from your Force use by a force beyond my comprehension.
But no I must go, there is another one who you need to hear from more. Goodbye for now young one.
And with that he vanished, leaving Chera alone with her thoughts, but not for long.
Master Skywalker walked in.
"Hello Chera," he said gently, obviously he had been able to sense her turmoil when Jerik died
"Hello, Sir." She said giving him a deep Jedi bow. He made a face and sat down.
"Please call me Luke," he said, "I never really liked honorary titles but I tolerate them from Threepio and students. You are neither."
"Yes Sir err Luke." She said blushing. Old habits really do die-hard.
"So Jerik was your brother?" he said, she couldn't help but wonder where he had learned that.
"Yes he was, he was also a very good friend. I'm sorry I let him die."
"You didn't 'let' him do anything. He made his choice. He felt that you and Sydnee were more important." Chera starting crying again now. Letting out the emotions that she was feeling.
"But he died for me, I feel so helpless. It's like I lost a part of me. I can't explain it. I never knew I had a brother and it was all I wanted, a sibling. You know? Somebody who was like me. He died to save me. I lost the thing I wanted most in the world. Within seconds of knowing it existed I lost it." She managed to sob out. She knew deep down in her heart that it wasn't her fault. And Luke knew it. He sighed and got up to leave.
"Chera," he said as he was walking out the door, "you did good, and nobody, not myself, not Mara, not Kyp, not anyone, could have handled it better. I'm proud of you." And then he left. Chera was alone with her thoughts now, but somehow not as alone. It was a strange feeling. And she welcomed it. She too got up to leave, she turned before she left, she thought she felt a small flicker of Jerik's presence but then it was gone as quickly as it had come.
"Must have just been a memory." She said to herself. And then she too was gone, and the room was left alone as it was all those years ago when Qui-Gon Jinn had died.
