Chera ignored the last comment as they entered a small circular room, this one was almost oozing with memories. She gently increased the efforts she had been making to ignore them.
"Lovely isn't it?" Jerik asked into her efforts
"Yes, I suppose it is from a certain point of view."
"Do you know what happened in here, Chera?" he asked, almost sounding concerned.
"No, I don't."
"Chera, my grandfather died in here. But also more, a Jedi Master was killed by him. My grandfather," Jerik said almost whimsically "Your grandfather, Chera."
"My what?!" Chera exclaimed
"Your grandfather, my grandfather, Chera, I'm your brother." If Chera hadn't been so strong she would have fallen over and fainted. But as it was she just sat down against the wall and slid slowly down to the ground.
"A brother?" Chera said slowly, hearing the words come from her own mouth sounding strange even to her own ears.
"A half brother actually Chera. Your father left my mother when I was one, that's about the time he met your mother." Jerik explained
"My brother?" Chera still sounded dazed "Jerik why didn't you tell me?" she asked looking up at him
"Because, I couldn't tell you then" he said sitting down next to her "I wasn't allowed to. They didn't want you to know, I couldn't go against them" He explained. Chera leaned back against the wall and let out a deep breath, then suddenly she jerked her head back up and looked at him.
"Jerik one thing you haven't told me, Who is our grandfather?" She knew from what she had read that it was either Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan Kenobi, or the Sith Lord Darth Maul. Jerik looked down then back up at her and suddenly said
"Darth Maul."
Chera sucked in a deep breath and then leaned forward and slowly, and totally against her normal form, she cried. She felt Jerik put his arm around her back and heard him trying to calm her the next thing she knew there was another presence in the room with them.
Caallista smiled again as the puny Jedi tried to match his strength against hers, it was a tiring game, but she could wait. It was so much fun to do this. Make them crazy. She struck his lightsaber again, this time accentuating it with a low kick to the legs, he jumped just in time though, but then was forced to flip again as she shoved her lightsaber into the air, he came within centimeters of landing on it. But unfortunately he flipped. So did she, she flipped up onto her hand and sprung off the ground and landed on her feet a meter away from him. He gasped in astonishment. Obviously nobody in that stupid Jedi Academy of his could do that. She smiled again and charged at him, taking him completely off guard. She loved that, scaring him. Hoping each movement on his part would be his last.
Luke was rapidly growing angry at the Callista clone. She seemed so cruel, unfeeling. She had killed a woman he had once loved, run from him, and then defiled her grave and stole her lightsaber. He wanted to hate her, but he knew he couldn't. He just couldn't. That would be betraying everything he believed, and all his friends. She tried another low blow and he flipped again. This was getting harder and harder, especially with her laughing, mocking each time he missed. She feigned a slash to his left leg and when he jumped she swung her lightsaber under his legs and tapped his right arm gently, burning through his clothes to his skin. He groaned a little, it stung. It was getting harder and harder to like her. Then he remembered it, something he himself had said a few years before You can't hate the person, you can hate the evil, and pity the person for becoming a vessel of it. But never hate the person. It resonated deep in his core for a second, bringing clarity of mind. And with that clarity came visions, also visions of things this Caallista clone had said to him, and thought, and the way her mind felt to him. Familiar, like, a presence from another time, another place. Then it hit him. She was like, the Emperor, almost as if she was a part of him as well as a part of Caallista, that could explain somethings. Yes she most definately was part of the Emperor. She had something about her. Armed with this new knowledge Luke swung his lightsaber about defensively, one time he actually touched her arm. She screamed, it was a peircing shriek. More like outrage then pain. She was angry that he had hurt her. She started swinging her saber madly, her hair flying everywhere giving her the appearance of a mad woman. Luke didn't remember what happened next, he just found his legs swing under hers and knock her over, then he saw him standing over her with his saber near her heart. Then, panting, he said slightly defiantly,
"Your over confidence is your weakness." She smiled back, obviously knowing what he knew. She kept panting, then lunged forward, driving his saber through her own heart. Falling to the floor, she took a deep breath, and with the little bit of life she had left said quietly with a weak smile "Your faith in your friends is yours." Then she was dead.
"Where did I see that picture?" Leia said. She had a funny feeling about this palace, the second she had stepped foot on the the stone floor. "I don't remember you seeing any picture hon." Han said a liitle confused. "I did, when we were chasing after Sydnee. It can't be far now."
"And why are we looking for this picture?" Han said. "Did you have a feeling about it?" Leia looked at Han and said. "Yes, something from my past, way past." What your father?" Han said. "Don't know." She replied. "I just had one of those feelings when I got a glimps of it."
"A Jedi thing, huh?" Han said. Han and Leia walked down the winding hallways and into dusty rooms. The she saw it. A picture, not a holo but a picture of a woman. "I think that this is it. It's her!" Leia said. "Who?" Han said confused.
Jerik looked up and temporarily froze. There in the entrance to the room was the ghostly figure of his grandfather, Darth Maul, the once man who had fathered a child with his concubine that resulted in Chera and Jerik's father. Jerik's first reaction was to jump up and protect his sister, but that reaction was quickly replaced by his own knowledge that it wouldn't help.
And the fact that it would kill the cause, the one him and Mallice, and Caallista, and even his master had worked for. He couldn't do it, Maul gave him a sharp nod, that was the signal.
Jerik looked down at Chera slowly, almost as if it pained him to look at her, and it did. She was his sister, and he was about to betray her.
"Chera," he said slowly, "it doesn't have to be like this, you can turn, if you turn and join me nobody will be able to stop us, not Mallice, not my master, nobody. Not even your beloved Skywalker."
Suddenly Luke heard a man screaming
"No!!!"
He spun around and saw a tall dark man with black hair and brilliant violet eyes standing in the door. He rushed over to the Callista clone and grabbed her in his arms and started rocking her gently saying:
"Caallista? Caallie? Speak to me please darling don't die. I need you."
Luke was stunned, this man loved her. He genuinely cared for the woman in front of him. Dead. Then the man looked up at him.
"You!" he said accusingly "You're the one responsable for her death."
Then the man ignited his own lightsaber. A bright red blade. Luke tried to talk, but found words escaped him as the man brought his saber down crashing over Luke's head.
Chera looked up slowly, could he really be the brother she had dreamed of her entire life? This power hungry shell of a man? No he couldn't be of the same relation as her, of course the difference was that their father had abandoned him, he had died for her. Chera met his eyes with her unwavering stare.
"No Jerik," she finally managed to get out, "I won't join you, I can't join you. I have responsibilities to my people just as much as you do to your friends."
Jerik nodded, he obviously had expected as much as this,
"Chera I had hoped you would join, I really did. They told me you were too strong for this, they knew you would refuse me. And that truly leaves me no choice but to destroy you sister."
Chera stood up swiftly, stumbling, startled by this latest development. She managed to get to her feet and ignite her purple lightsaber just a second before Jerik ignited his blue-green blade.
Chera quickly assumed a defensive stance with her blade held at a ninety-degree angle. Jerik assumed a similar stance facing her, "Chera it's not to late, you can still join me, or I'm going to have to destroy you."
Chera didn't answer, she simply stared at him, trying to tap into her danger sense with the force, preparing herself for battle, to the death, and the fact that she might have to kill her only living relative.
Suddenly her danger sense flared, and she shot her saber to the right just in time to intercept Jerik's blade as it came crashing across in a slice that would have separated her legs from the rest of her body.
Jerik forced his saber down in between their bodies; Chera's followed suit. The sabers came up in the ready position again. This time it was Chera who took the offensive with a quick feint at Jerik's left then a stab at his legs followed by a force enhanced flip over his head. She landed on the other side of him just as he realized what was going on. Jerik spun around and their sabers met again. Chera wasn't sure what was going on, her entire body becoming a vessel of the Force. She wasn't sure what exactly happened, or how long they fought on like that. The next thing she realized Master Skywalker was entering the room with the man introduced to her as Malarn, now known to her as Mallice. They were fighting, and Mallice was steadily gaining an advantage. Chera knew she had to hurry if she was going to help. She suddenly realized she had Jerik backed into a corner, she could end it all know, right here, without anymore delay. But no she couldn't kill her own brother, not now, not ever, not even if he was trying to kill her.
Suddenly a flash of Jedi insight hit her, she carefully maneuvered Jerik into a corner, then a quick stab to his legs, and Jerik instinctively jumped to avoid being cut and slammed his head against a fallen beam. He fell down unconscious; Chera spun around to help Master Skywalker, only to see him fall down the large pit in the center of the room. As she saw her beloved master fall to certain doom only one word came to Chera?s mind, one she screamed at the top of her lungs almost unconsciously;
"NOOOO!!!!!" |
