The following is a list of Simmers', who
lived in various Counties and Cities in
England, in the 1500's through the
1800's! They are listed alphabetically,
by County or Shire, and by Century. Where
possible, the names of Parents and Spouses
are given, in order to aid those who may
be able to make a connection! It should
be noted, that there are literally
thousands of individuals with another
variation, or apparent variation of the
SIMMERS surname, who are not on this
List! Those surnames are Simers, Simer,
Simmer, Symmers, Symmer, Symer, and
possibly even Symmes, who are available,
but who are not here, at this time! No
doubt, some of those individuals, may
have eventually adopted the Simmers
Suname, even as some German Zimmer
individuals, did! However it should
also be considered, that there were
Simmers individuals, who lived in
parts of Germany, going back to
about 1620, if not before!

Were we able to push back in Time,
to the 1300's, the 1400's and the
1500's it is most likely that we
would find the Simmers surname,
and we might even find that some
of these families were cousins,
though living in foriegn lands!
For the most avid researcher, this
would be a most tantilizing,
objective!!!

[Note: There are also numerous Simmers'
to be found in Scotland, from about 1616,
on, with additional Simmers in Wales. About
28 Simmers in Germany, from around 1620, to
around 1880! All of this supports what we
know about the Simmers families' "Diaspora"
wherin they were treated by the English
Crown as 'Outlaws', more or less, and
dispersing them throughout the Empire, and
to other places in Europe! This apparently,
lest they gain political power! As a Sept
of a Noble Celtic Clan, and dating back to
Pre 1100's, the Simmers men were rewarded
by having all of the rights, usually enjoyed
by full Clan members, including the right
to use the Clan Tartan, emblems and regalia,
and Coat of Arms! Just how many Simmers'
from the various British Isles Counties
emigrated to America and Canada, remains
to be determined! And, although several of
our fellow Simmers researchers have been
able to trace their Simmers Line to the
Simmers or Zimmer families who emigrated
here, a rather large number of us, have yet
to determine the origin of our Simmers
Lines! Perhaps through information that is
now displayed on our Simmers Surname site,
together with that which is being added
all the time, we will begin to gain a
better understanding of just where all of
these Simmers families originated from,
who they left behind, and where others
of them emigrated to!

It is quite important to add, that in
spite of this early attempt to mainly
identify those families whose surnames
were precisely Simmers, there nevertheless
still remains, counless families in all
of the places, mentioned above, with
surnames that although spelled a little
differently, appear to be mere variations
of the same root surname! Just what the
reasons for this are, and were at the time,
remains a bit of a mystery! Perhaps, we
shall know, soon, as more and more, family
historians from those countries, visit our
website, and provide explanations that
have been passed down by their families
there? To illustrate this more clearly,
where we find individuals in a family, in
one generation where the name is spelled
Symmers, and in the very next generation,
as well as those coming after, the name
becomes Simmers, we have a clue, that one
spelling may be in the Gaelic, where the
next may be a more "English" spelling! The
same, certainly would also seem to be true
in the case of Zimmer or Zimmers, becoming
Simmer or Simmers! One thing does seem quite
clear, that the various Spellings seem to be
more prevalent in some counties than in
others, and may even vary on a somewhat,
regional basis! Such that Simmers may not
appear in a number of counties, at all,
yet Simer, Simmer, Symer, Symmer, and
Symers, and Symmers, appear more frequently
in most counties. This is especially true
in Scotland! It is interesting that in the
Counties where Simmers does appear, it seems
to appear almost as early as the others do,
where they appear! This would seem to suggest
that the "Anglicization" of the Gaelic version
began somewhat earlier than the mid 1500's!

Another thing that seems to be apparent, is
that the spouse names, in the case of Simmers,
often appear to be more Anglican or English,
than with some of the other spellings. This
might be an explaination of why some families
who tended to marry other Scots, might feel
less inclined to switch to the more English
spelling, than those who were in the Counties
that were more heavily occupied by English
settlers!

The number of Simmers in all of the countries
is so numerous, it turns out, that it is
doubtful that this website could display all
of them! Consequently, other websites may be
required to display them, and whether that
happens at all, depends on whether anyone
would undertake to do it!!

Just based on sheer numbers, and taking all
of the various versions of the Simmers
surname into account, it would seem that
the evidence would stronly suggest, that
many Simmers may eventually be able to
trace their origins to an English or Scot
Ancestor!!

Much has been said about surnames that were
changed, after Immigrants arrived in the United
States and Canada, but we now know that many of
them may well have been Simmers, long before
they arrived in the New World!
