The surname, "SIMMERS", like many others, has numerous,
twists and turns! Many Simmers surname researchers have
experienced, being able to trace their roots, back, only
a few generations, before hitting a "Brick Wall"! This is
due, in part, to the fact, that some of the Simmers families
appear to have originated, in Germany, Holland, and Russia,
on the one hand, and in Scotland, Wales, Ireland, and
England, on the other hand!
This website is intended to provide clues, to interested
Simmers researchers, as to the origin of the name, in their
respective family tree, and to suggest possible connections
between Simmers descendants and spouses, who may be living
today!
One of the newest and potentially most useful tools,
for researchers of Pennsylvania Simmers', is "The
Pennsylvania Counties List"
At this time, the best identified Simmers Families are:
The Heinrich Simmers Family, originally of PA, and
more recently of Tuscarawas County in Ohio,
The Christian Simmers/Zimmers Family of
Rockingham County in Virginia,
The "George Simmers, a german" Family (from "The
History of Butler County", written a number of years ago,
and readily available on the Internet) of Butler County in
Pennsylvania, which could also be called the "Simmers/Reffner
Family",
The James Simmers/Zimmer Family of Schuylkill
County in Pennsylvania,
The Daniel Simmers Family of Chester County in
Pennsylvania, where many of the earliest settlers came from
Wales, originally,
and several others. Many of these families are of
German or Prussian origin, yet there currently remains a rather
significant number of Simmers individuals, whose family origins
are still un-clear! This is largely due to family stories suggesting
that their Simmers ancestors were originally of British origin! In
fact, many Simmers individuals are listed on the International
Genealogical Index, in Scotland and England!
One of the most often re-ocurring, given names,
among Simmers is George! It is likely, that this one name holds the
key, to removing a number of "Brick Walls"!

JOHN SIMMERS who was sponsored by a Mr. Herbert Smith, appears
to be the first Simmers to arrive in the The New World! This
was in the year 1656, more than 100 years before the War of
Independence! He is listed in that year, in Westmoreland
County Virginia, which was created several years prior. This
is the same Westmoreland County where the early ancestors of
both U.S. Presidents Washington and Monroe, and of famous
Civil War General Robert E. Lee, settled! In fact, most of the
early settlers in Westmoreland, and much of the rest of the
Virginia Colony, were from England and Scotland!
We have searched and searched, and searched some more!
And, then we came to know, these Commandments......
(1) "Thou shalt name your male children:
James, John, Joseph, Josiah, Richard, Thomas,
Samuel, or William!"
(2) "Thou shalt name your female children:
Elizabeth, Mary, Martha, Maria, Sarah, Virginia,
May, or Ann!"
(3) "Thou shalt leave NO trace of your female children!"
(4) "Thou shalt, after naming your children from the
above lists, call them by strange nicknames such as:
Ike, Eli, Polly, Dolly, Sally, Hattie, Mattie and
Sukey --- making them difficult to trace!"
(5) "Thou shalt NOT use any middle names on any legal
documents or census reports, and only where necessary,
you may use only initials on legal documents!"
6) "Thou shalt learn to sign all documents illegibly so
that your surname can be spelled, or misspelled, in
various ways: Hicks, Hicks, Hix, Hixe, Hucks, or Kicks!"
(7) "Thou shalt, after no more then 3 generations, make
sure that all family records are lost, misplaced, burned
in a fire, or buried so that NO future trace of them can
be found!"
(8) "Thou shalt propagate misleading legends, rumors
and vague innuendo regarding your place of origin!
(A) You may have come from : England, Ireland, Scotland,
Wales....or Iran.
(B) you may have American Indian ancestry of the _______
______tribe.
(C) You may have descended from one of three brothers
that came over from____________."
(9) "Thou shalt leave NO cemetery records, or headstones
with legible names!"
(10) "Thou shalt leave NO family Bible with records of
birth, marriages, or deaths!"
(11) "Thou shalt ALWAYS flip thy name around. If born
James Albert, thou must make all the rest of thy
records in the names of Albert, AJ, JA, AL, Bert, Bart,
or Alfred!"
(12) "Thou must also flip thy parent's names when making
reference to them, although "Unknown" or a blank line is
an acceptable alternative!"
(13) "Thou shalt name at least 5 generations of males,
and dozens of their cousins with identical names in order
to totally confuse researchers!"
