What I would say would be the most important tip to having either a cat or a dog, or any kind of animal is, you must love and respect every animal. It is one of God's creations. What every living thing needs in order to survive is, food, water, oxygen, and living space. Sounds easy? Not all animals are as easy as we say they are.
