Summer 06 Softball Preview
Were coming into May right now and softball is starting up officially May 14th for the scrubs this year. Who will shine this year? Who will disappoint?
Lets take a look at some of the players from last summer and what we might expect from them
:::Frank Bonham:::
With his fireman career on the rise we may not see as much of his crazy ass that wed want to see. Frank started to develop his power stroke last summer and I think he could be more of a power threat this summer, not just a crazy son of a bitch on the base paths.
:::Brian Boehlke:::
Had a few off months during the winter, but has been participating in 16 intramurals for DePaul, so I expect nothing less from what he was showing last summer, but a whole lot more. I expect B-squared to tear it up offensively and defensively again.
:::Brad Bovenkerk:::
Not the most liked scrub, but hes a scrub none the less. Brad showed signs of Brian Boehlke over at 3rd base at times last summer, but apparently Im the only one who saw it. If that defensive side comes out of Brad this summer, expect him to be picked higher when teams are selected. If Brad could hit the ball anywhere but Center Field all the time would also help him a lot. I am going to try and work with Brad this summer.
:::Bob Roubik:::
Last summer my power started to really show itself at points. Granted Im a pretty big guy, I should have power, but at times it was sick how far I would hit it. I also started switch-hitting last summer, so expect a whole lot more of that this summer. Since I am terrible at hitting to right field when I feel I should, I will just bat lefty. I did have a few HRs as a lefty last year, which is impressive for it being my first summer switch-hitting. Defensively I was ashamed of myself at times. I am dedicated to improving my defense this summer, I already can throw anyone out pretty much
I need to learn how to catch fly balls though.
:::Dave Siorek:::
Lets not kid ourselves, Dirty definitely slacked last summer, he wasnt the same as he was two summers ago. And this summer he wont even be around a lot of the time, but when he is here he better not slack, otherwise his speedy image is going to go to waste offensively. Defensively Id say hes where hes always been, but last summer his offensive production definitely went downhill from two summers ago. Dont get me wrong, he had some great offensive moments, but overall, Id definitely say he went downill.
:::Jon Kearny:::
Huge fan of Kearnys, after all we wouldnt have night games if it wasnt for him working for the fields we play on. Two summers ago I didnt even know who Jon Kearny was, but with his bat and defensive I gained respect for him
two summers ago
However, last summer his bat and defense crumbled. I dont know what happened, but he definitely went downhill too. Im thinking this summer Jon will rediscover his stroke and get out of his offensive slump. On defense he is always where he needs to be, he just needs to work on getting his throws up and out of the dirt and hell be back to impressing me over at 3rd base.
:::Mike Smagacz:::
Smags didnt disappoint often last summer, and coming into summer this year fresh off his first year at ISU I wonder what hes going to bring to the table. He can hit the ball wherever the hell he wants, he can field and he can run. Smags is definitely one of the most impressive scrubs out there. I dont have anything other than that to say about him really, but I have to wonder if hell still be as good as he was last year, this year.
