Sewing Piping
Cut out garment pieces and place piping on one cut-out section. Pin it on the right side of the fabric, along the seam line. Piped edge should face toward garment; raw edges should be inside the seam line, on the seam allowance. Machine-baste along stitched line of piping, as close as possible to the cord. Then pin garment sections together and stitch close to the basting. Trim seam allowances; press to one side.

Gift Wraps
Fabric scraps make pretty wrappings and are doubly welcome if the recipient does patchwork or makes doll clothes.

Pockets
Invisibly sew pockets to garment the professional way. Baste pocket to garment. Then, instead of slip stitching, backstitch pocket in place. Work from inside of garment, catching pocket seam allowance with stitches.

Sleeves
The ease threads on the sleeve cap will be much easier to pull if you loosen thread tension on your machine slightly and stitch from the right side of the sleeve. You will be pulling on the bobbin thread.

Collar
To keep collar points from curling, fuse a small piece of interfacing to corner area.

Seams
Stabilize crosswise seams by stitching seam binding or twill tape in with seam.

Gathers
Let fabric weight guide your stitch length choice - small stitches for sheer or lightweight fabric, longer stitches for medium to heavy weight fabrics. Sew at least two rows of gathering stitches 1/4" apart. Adjust gathers by pulling up on the bobbin thread. On heavy material, make one row of zigzag stitches over a fine strong cord. Pull up the cord to adjust gathers. For ruffles, cut strip 2 to 3 times the length of the finished ruffle. Pin ruffle to garment, matching pin markers, and pull up on bobbin thread to adjust fullness. Pin before stitching.

Needles and Scissors
To sharpen machine needles, stitch through a piece of sandpaper. To sharpen scissors, cut through fine sandpaper several times.

Kitchen Towels
When bath towels become too ragged around the edges, cut into four pieces, hem all sides and use as kitchen towels.

Drapery Lining
Make it separate from the drapes, add a row of buttonholes along the top to slip over drapery rod. Use a few snaps to hold lining to back of drapes. Easy to take down and wash.

Dish Rags
Make from nylon net on one side for scrubbing and regular dish rag material on the other. Washes beautifully too.

Add Length to a Dress
For a little girl who has grown too tall for her favourite dress, cord the bottom and add a flounce.
