Even vs. Uneven Plaids
The basic difference between even and uneven plaids is the arrangement of the stripes that make up the plaid. An even plaid has the same stripe arrangement both crosswise and lengthwise. An uneven plaid has a different stripe pattern appearing either crosswise, or lengthwise, or both. To determine whether your plaid is even or uneven, fold fabric on the lengthwise grain. Fold one corner down diagonally to match the stripes in the repeated design, if possible. If both the lengthwise and crosswise stripes match, your plaid is even. If either the lengthwise or crosswise don't match, the plaid is uneven.
Printed vs. Woven Plaids
In a printed plaid, the design is printed onto one side of the fabric. A woven plaid is actually formed by weaving coloured yarns into fabric. Wovens appear the same on the right and wrong sides, unless there is surface interest, such as texture or nap.
Sewing with Plaids
For uneven plaids, use the 'with nap' pattern layout. Fold of fabric should lie along centre of dominant line. Add interest by cutting details (e.g. pocket) on the bias. Slip basting will help ensure perfect matching. |
