The technique of shadow applique is one where a transparent or semi-transparent fabric, such as lawn, is decoratively applied to another transparent fabric, such as organdie or voile. The colours can match or contrast and, for interesting effects, printed fabrics can be used. To prepare for embroidery, trace the design onto the wrong side of the background fabric. Tack the two layers together, using small stitches and following the outline of the design. Pin stitch, chain stitch or whip stitches can be used for outlining. Decide whether the contrast fabric is to be applied to the right side of the design for brilliant contrast or to the wrong side for a softer, pastel effect. When the appliqued parts of the design have been completed, cut away the surplus fabric. Cut close to the embroidery.
By hand, use matching thread and small stitches, machine-stitch all around design outline. Cut out applique just outside the machine stitching. On curves, clip into seam allowance. Turn seam allowance to the back, just inside the stitching. Pin and baste applique in place. Slip-stitch applique in place using tiny stitches.
By machine, stitch around design. Trim away excess fabric. Pin and baste in place. Zigzag closely around applique, covering straight stitches. |
