Mary Slessor

She was born in Aberdeen in 1848. The family moved to Dundee in 1859, when her father was sacked from his cobbler's job for drunkenness, and her older brother Robert died.
She worked as a weaver in a mill, a half-timer (spending half her time at the mill and half her time at school).
She was deeply religious, and in 1876, she left for Nigeria as a missionary. She taught in various missions, as well as introducing Western medicines and fighting local superstitions. She was somewhat of a maverick, and unconventional, wearing her hair like a boy, and discarding the conventions of normal European female attire for more practical clothing. Although, often at odds with her fellow Europeans, she had the respect of the natives.
She died in Nigeria in 1915.
