Scottish History

This will be a page, which will reflect on Scottish History, in a friendly unacademic manner. The high points, the low points, the triumphs and the disasters, the achievements and the failures. The ups and downs that nations as well as individuals all enjoy and endure. It will be set out as historical milestones, with a brief commentary attached and in strict chronological order. This will gradually build up over time to give a Foundation in Scottish History.



85 A.D. Gnaeus Julius Agricola, the Roman Governor of Britain defeats the Caledonii, the name given by the Romans to the inhabitants of Northern Scotland, at Mons Graupius (near Huntly or Bennachie).

139 Construction of the Antonine Wall begins, it stretched from Carriden on the Forth to Old Kilpatrick on the Clyde (completed circa 161).

521 Columba born in Donegal Ireland

565 Columba establishes settlement on Iona

597 Death of Columba

1125 Burgh of Edinburgh created

1175 Burgh of Glasgow created

1178 Burgh of Dundee created

1237 Treaty of York. Alexander the second of Scotland gave up all claims to Northern English
Counties in return for certain estates in Cumberland and Northumberland.

1270 William Wallace born


1297 William Wallace and Andrew Moray's forces defeat the English at the Battle of Stirling Bridge.


1305 William Wallace executed in London.


1314 Battle of Bannockburn, Scots led by Robert 1 (grandson of Robert the Bruce), defeated the English led by Edward the second.

1320 The Declaration of Arbroath. A letter to Pope John the 22nd declaring a resolve to keep Scotland independent from England.

1346 King David the second defeated at the battle of Nevi's cross after returning from exile in France

1357 First Treaty of Berwick, where David the second was released after a ransom of 100,000 merks after being a prisoner for 11 years following his defeat in 1346 at the Battle of Neville's cross.

1413 St. Andrew's University formally founded, but teaching began around 1410.


1451 Glasgow University founded.

1468 Orkney and Shetland ceded to Scotland from Norway for 58000 Florins, as part of the dowry of Princess Margaret, daughter of Christian 1 of Norway, who married James, the 3rd of Scotland.


1513 Battle of Flodden

1542 Mary Queen of Scots born near Linlithgow

1582 Edinburgh University founded.

1587 Mary Queen of Scots executed, by order of Queen Elizabeth 1.

1692 Massacre at Glencoe

1707 Union with England

1745 Jacobite Rebellion

1790 Forth and Clyde canal opens

1822 Caledonian Canal Open

1973 The Royal Commission on the constitution recommends legislative devolution for Scotland

1978 The "first" Scotland Act became law, an assembly would be set up depending on the outcome of a referendum.

1979 March 1st Referendum Day, with a 52% for the assembly of those who voted (but only 33% of the whole electorate). The legislation required 40% of the whole electorate to vote yes. The referendum failed.

1989 The Scottish Constitutional Convention was formed, by political parties and interested groups, including the churches, unions, and other public bodies.


1997 September 11th The Scottish electorate vote in a referendum to establish a devolved Scottish Parliament.

1999 On July 1st, The opening of the first Scottish Parliament in over 270 years.
